  • There Aren't As Many Hunters

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jan 4, 2023

Even in Montana where we like to think of hunting as part of our heritage, there aren’t nearly as many hunters as there once were. That doesn’t bode well. Hunting license sales account for about two-thirds of the funding for Montana’s Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Montana is third in the nation in percentage of hunters at 21.1 percent behind South Dakota at 24.1 and Wyoming at 22.7. Montana, however, does top the nation in firearm ownership. According to a 2020 report by the Rand...

  • In the Still of the Night

    Kari Green, Karis Corner|Jan 4, 2023

Did you ever have one of those days when something comes over you and gives you a nudge or feeling? I used to have those “feelings” that made me leery of things. I left work at 6:15 p.m. Monday evening and as I left several vehicles with flashing lights were approaching me and then turned toward the fire hall. The men were running from their vehicles, leaving little time to make an imprint in the snow their feet were moving so fast. I called my boss at the office and told him the fire crew was headed out – if he was needing a space fille...

  • I Have to Brag About my Boys

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Jan 4, 2023

I learned something from both of my sons over the last couple of weeks. The first lesson came from my four-year-old son Lincoln. Lincoln is a very observant boy. He catches things that I often overlook. One week, Lincoln was unable to attend preschool because he was sick. Susan, my wife, stayed home with our youngest son from Monday to Wednesday. Then came my turn to take care of Linc. I was stressed out about work and it made it hard for me to enjoy my time with him due to me worrying about wor...

December 28. Christmas has come and gone for another year. Very cold and then it started raining, so got slick all over. I went to Havre and the Messiah Lutheran Church had a nice Christmas Eve Service led by Marilyn Henry. It rained on Monday and some on Tuesday. Bill brought me home Tuesday and when he returned to Havre it rained hard from the river bridge to Chinook. Different ones reported rain in other places from Missoula and on East and North. Temps made it to the high 30’s. The trains we...

  • Keep Your Veterans in Mind on Holidays

Sharon Kindle, Patriotic Chair, VFW Post 4067|Jan 4, 2023

This is a trifle late for New Year’s, but jot it down, especially for the 4th of July. When lighting fireworks, or shooting off guns, keep in mind those among us suffering from PTSD. What is fun for some can be terror and heartbreaking to others. A quote from Pharr, Texas “The sounds of fireworks, or can resemble gunshots, and that can add to the stress of veterans suffering from PTSD.” “The simple thing of just the smell of gunpowder can trigger something. It doesn’t have to be the noise”, Marine veteran Alfredo Oritz said. It’s typical to ce...

  • VFW Club: Boot Scooting Proof

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Jan 4, 2023

You are only limited by your own boundary and mind. As the evening became chilly and the friendship and laughter blended, friends gathered Saturday night at the VFW Club for a New Year's Eve dance and celebration. One of those dancing and celebrating was Noel Emond who deals daily with the walking (and waltzing) support of his armed walker and his oxygen tanks. It may slow him down and you will probably not see him break dancing, but he has been known to "brake" while dancing to avoid collisions...
