In just eight weeks, this newspaper will celebrate the beginning of 97 years in publication in Phillips County and be just 154 editions from its 100th Anniversary. As you can imagine, the Phillips County News has seen thousands of changes over the years while printing over 5,000 editions of the newspaper which are not excluded to the paper's having the pressman arrested for moonshining in this publication's first year, or burning to the ground in 2010, losing the last printing press, and...

A sales tax in Montana has been a political lightning rod for years, but more voices are pushing the idea of allowing cities and communities to adopt a local version in an effort to reduce property taxes. Montana is one of only five states that does not impose a general or local sales tax and fast-growing communities fighting increasing housing costs and tourist destinations plan to argue they should allow local voters to decide whether to impose a community sales tax. It is an idea that has failed in recent state legislative sessions. The...

I used to dread winter. I don’t anymore. Like most everything else these days, it passes too quickly. I’ll admit that last winter, which stretched well into April, was a bit much, but it only made spring shorter. As a kid growing up in southern Indiana I always looked forward to winter because if it snowed, we usually got out of school. Unfortunately snow was rare in that part of the country. Then I moved to Cooke City and found out what winter was really about at 7,700-feet elevation. It wou...
So I had a cheat day. But I did not post that to my keto support group’s page on social media. That is one way to easily get attacked. If I know one thing about the internet, it’s that people are more prone to attack your joy if it’s something they don’t agree with. You can respond to this by writing a letter to the editor if you don’t agree but just know that I had a cheat day. That cheat day was Christmas. I ate carbs all day long. Yams, buns, peaches and cream pie; and I started the day o...
