The Malta cross country team headed west on a crispy cool Friday morning to Missoula, MT for the state cross country championships and participated in the Class B races on Saturday the 26th. The state cross country championships are the finale of a ten week season of hard work. This is what you work towards all season, and it is an exciting time, filled with apprehension and nervousness until the starting gun fires and all the runners explode into a sea of colorful uniforms representing many schools from all over the state of Montana. The...
The Malta Cross Country team traveled west to Harlem on a chilly autumn morning for the last meet of the season. The Harlem Cross Country meet takes place at the Harlem Golf Course, a relatively flat 3.1 mile course. This is a great meet and a great place to test your skills you've practiced all season, and hopefully give you a little mental boost and help you gain confidence for the state meet the following weekend. In the past, I have dubbed this the "flat as a pancake" course, one in which yo...
The Malta cross country team headed east early Saturday morning to Fort Peck, the site of the annual Scottie Cross Country Invitational meet. While we drove east, the wicked west wind pushed us along and we soon arrived there at the Downsteam Campground (Kiwanis Park) there below the Fort Peck Dam. The races would start at the north end of the parking lot of Fort Peck Dam and Interpretive Center. The start of the races would mean that all runners would face the west and the wind and would run into it for over 400 meters or more until you got...
The Malta Cross Country team traveled nearly 950 miles this past week and not all of it took place over a golf course. The team traveled to Frazer on Thursday, September 26 for the annual meet there, a beautiful area over looking the Missouri River at what is called Clarks Hill, in the middle of farmland and prairie. This meet is known for its figure eight running course where you go up and down the hills, running on dirt roads. It's one of the most spectator friendly courses we compete on,...
The Malta Cross Country team participated in the Fergus Cross Country Invite on Friday September 20 at the Pine Meadows Golf Course in Lewistown. This was an impromptu meet for us as we had found out the weekend before that the Frazer meet had been rescheduled for the following week and therefore we had no meet on the schedule for this week. So with a little research, we found the Fergus invite, registered the runners and then made our way south and west to the center of the state. This was a...
The Malta Cross Country team traveled west to the Havre Invitational Cross Country meet, last Saturday, where teams from up and down the Hi-line met on a beautiful late summer morning with cool temps, overcast skies and a nice breeze. The meet takes place at Prairie Farms Golf Course north of Havre, a green oasis in the middle of farmland. This meet has been a great meet to test the skills you've been practicing and see how you fair on this fairly flat golf course. The Mustang Cross Country team...
The Malta High School Cross Country Team ventured west on a beautiful autumn morning to Kalispell for the 60th MHSA State Cross Country Championship meet which was to be held at Rebecca Farm, an equestrian (horseback riding) facility that hosts one of the largest equestrian eventing competitions in the United States. But this Saturday’s event would be the state cross country races. “Third time’s the charm” I thought as we were riding along in the bus. This was the Malta Cross Country team’s third time to compete at the state meet in Kalispell....
The Malta Cross Country team headed west on a crispy cool autumn morning on Friday the 13th to the annual Harlem Invitational Cross Country Meet, which took place out at the Harlem Golf Course, a flat 3.1 mile course. This is the last race many of the runners will participate in before heading into the post season and a trip to the state meet in Kalispell on October 21. The...
Fort Peck's Downstream Campground below the Fort Peck Dam was the scene of the Glasgow Scottie Invitational Cross Country Meet, held on a very windy and cool Saturday, September 30. Many teams from all over northeastern Montana were invited to run one of the fastest courses around the area. The very flat paved Nature Trail weaves around ponds, cat tails and views of the powerhouses. The start of the race was changed this year from the prairie area to the parking lot near the Interpretive...
The Malta Cross Country Team didn’t have a doubleheader, but we doubled up this week. We had a meet in Shelby on Monday and then another one in Frazer on Thursday, all in the same week. It is not very often we participate in two meets in one week, but that’s how the schedule worked for us this year. And we capitalized on the fact that we had a free weekend, so we focused on getting in some good solid practices this past week and that paid off. We headed west on Monday to the annual Shelby Cross Country meet which is always a fun and fes...

The Frazer Cross Country Meet had been previously scheduled for September 22, but had been postponed because of some much needed rain to the area and the results of that lovely rain event caused a very muddy area for running. But on Tuesday, October 4, the Malta Cross Country team traveled on a very beautiful fall day over to the area called Clark's Hill, just a few miles southwest of Frazer overlooking the beautiful Missouri River. Today's running course was dry and provided just the right...

"This is the race that a person can run and post one of your best times of the season." This is not the usual cross-country course with grass and dirt roads that you might find at a golf course. Once you get over the prai...
