The true meaning of Memorial Day is to honor the ones who gave all to gain our freedom. On Memorial Day our flags are raised at half-staff from sunrise to noon, then lifted to full staff to signify hope and to honor all our country’s war heroes. Decoration Day-Memorial Day, now one in the same. It wasn’t always as on May 5, 1868, after the Civil War ended a group of Union veterans called the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) decided to create Decoration Day to honor the fallen. They began the tradition of decorating the graves with flowers as...
My apologies for the mix-up of dates concerning the American Legion garage sale and our soup luncheon at the center. After all, we are ‘senior’ citizens. My hope is that you all took in the great sale. Now, on to other things: I promised soups of many colors and flavors and our group is delivering just that. How about chicken and scratch dumplings (so light and fluffy you won’t realize you’ve eaten them); creamy potato soup with home grown potatoes; pureed butternut squash; cowboy soup that mocks chili with its flavorings. That’s a preview w...

August is Antiterrorism Awareness Month which is fitting as we began our chapter on September 2022 with 9/11. Although we should always remain vigilant in light of attacks carried out during the past few years, Antiterrorism Awareness Month should be a time we instill heightened awareness and employees, locations and operations from vigilance to prevent terrorist attacks and protect DLA [Defense Logistics Agency]. How many of you know of a person who has earned a Purple Heart while in combat or giving their life in the line of battle? Purple...
By now the glorious 4th of July celebrations are gone for another year, but lest we never forget our hard-fought freedom and we are still fighting for it. Independence Day commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. On July 4th the signers of the Declaration of Independence asserted that all are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. With these words, our forefathers formed a new nation and put...
Do you ever wonder about the pilot in the Caption’s seat while you settle in for your flight, wherever it may take you? One pilot ‘entered through the back door’ so to speak as he started in Navy flight school graduating college and then flew F/A-18 fighter jets. He saw four different theaters and eventually became a Navy test pilot. Flying the dynamic nature and complexity of military ops prepared the pilot to be one of the best commercial pilots. He knew how a ‘holding’ pattern, thunderstorms or turbulence can affect passengers having co...

Dale Dye, retired Marine caption, is the founder of the technical advisory firm “Warriors Inc”. Before that he served three tours in Vietnam, making it a total of 20 years in the service. Upon deployment, he felt at loose ends, realizing he’d always been a fan of movies especially military movies. The decision was made and Dye headed to Hollywood, not to be a star, but to qualify the reality of the military movies, not glorify them. As the saying ‘ignorance is bliss’, Dye soon found out he had a lot to learn and tackled it head-on by reading a...
March takes off with National Women’s History Month which celebrates the often-overlooked contributions of women in history. It is annually observed in the U.S., the United Kingdom and Australia, every March since 1987. March is selected as the month for observing Women’s History Month to correspond with International Women’s Day on March 8. The school district in Sonoma CA organized Women’s History Month in 1978. In 1980 President Jimmy Carter issued the first proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The Nav...
“It was 1943 and the U.S.A.T. Dorchester was sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, packed to capacity. Tragedy struck when a German submarine fired a torpedo at the ship, sinking it and killing the hundreds on board”. This is where the Four Chaplin’s Day history begins. They were of the Methodist, Jewish, Catholic, and Dutch Reformed Church faith. Life jackets were offered to the chaplains who refused as other passengers needed them more. The Chaplains were comforted only by the thought of their actions and the fact that they were going to meet...
The Malta Senior Center will be serving up biscuits with sausage gravy guaranteed to fill you up on Saturday, January 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a free will offering which will go toward the awning to be constructed over the new front door. I can still see the kids’ paternal gramma stirring the gravy in a humongous cast iron fry pan with the trash burner providing the heat. The fluffy biscuits (no Bisquick used in that house!) were piling up on a platter which would disappear like magic once the gravy hit the table. Many times t...
This is a trifle late for New Year’s, but jot it down, especially for the 4th of July. When lighting fireworks, or shooting off guns, keep in mind those among us suffering from PTSD. What is fun for some can be terror and heartbreaking to others. A quote from Pharr, Texas “The sounds of fireworks, or can resemble gunshots, and that can add to the stress of veterans suffering from PTSD.” “The simple thing of just the smell of gunpowder can trigger something. It doesn’t have to be the noise”, Marine veteran Alfredo Oritz said. It’s typical to ce...

In the 1930s the office of Civilian Defense worked to create what would become...
25 marked the first observance of National Veteran and Military Families Month acknowledging the great sacrifices military families make to ensure the nation's freedom. Long separations, at times, both parents are enlisted; there are frequent moves with at times unfavorable living conditions. Families embody strength, resilience, and courage no matter where they live and how long the separation. Families experience trauma, especially young children who at times are unable to express their feelings. Help is also given to military families in...
Come on down to the Malta Senior Center Saturday, October 22, and let your taste buds take you on an experience of yore. The free-will donations will go towards the awning over the front door. Dolly Parton, whom many people enjoy listening to her songs, had Stone Soup as a staple in her diet. Growing up in Tennessee, Parton was one of several children, who fondly recalls her parents, Robert and Avie while living in the beautiful Tennessee mountains. Avie Parton would have each of her children go in search a stone, scrub it clean, and bring the...
