Mrs. Osmundsons' Phillips County Library Storytime and Mrs. Houlds' Little Learners Preschool got together last Wednesday and Thursday for Halloween. The costumed children enjoyed monster stories and songs, a spooky interactive sensory wall, an egg carton bat craft, and a color page. Longtime supporters of the Phillips County 4-H Shooting Sports, the Malta American Legion Post No. 57 and the Sons of the American Legion donated a combined total of $3,000 to the local youth program. These donations will be used to purchase supplies as well as make equipment updates. The PC 4-H Shooting Sports program currently has 57 youth participating in the air pistol, air rifle and archery disciplines. Forty-eight 4-H members participated in the 4-H Livestock and forty-two members participating in the Miscellaneous Judging on October 18th at the Milk River Pavilion in Malta. The purpose of the event was to provide youth with the opportunity to develop skills in critical thinking, decision making, and the ability to verbalize reasonings to a judge. The Glasgow York Rite Masons were started in the first part of the 20th century. Due to lack of participation things were quiet for a number of years until Doc Curtis suggested moving the chapter to Malta. With the help of the Grand Chapter of Montana, numerous members of Malta Lodge became members of York Rite. These new members travelled to Lewistown and Great Falls to receive their degrees. The carcass results from the 2019 4-H and FFA livestock show at the Phillips County Fair are complete. Carcass results are eligible to be submitted to the Steer of Merit program, sponsored by the Montana Stockgrowers; Symbol of Excellence program, sponsored by the Montana Pork Producers Council; and Montana Certified Lamb program, sponsored by the Montana Wool Growers. The annual Jim Schumacher memorial livestock day was well attended with over twenty-five community livestock producers benefitting from the collaborative efforts of Phillips county extension and local veterinary care providers. September was a busy month for the Malta Sacajawea Chapter #37 Order of Eastern Star. Bessie Mae Waters was honored on her birthday, September 8, with cards, gifts and a visit from five members. May 2018, The Malta Mason Lodge #57 and Order of Eastern Star Sacajawea Chapter #37 once again placed markers at the Malta Cemetery. The weather cooperated as nine people busily placed close to 100 markers. This has become an annual event of honor for the members to perform. The winner of the Phillips County Library Classic Challenge was Amber Hofer of Loring, Mont. The challenge was open to junior high and high school students and adults and ran from Feb. 1 to Dec. 11, 2017.
