The Malta Mustangs gave fans plenty to cheer about last season, as the team went toe-to-toe with two of the top teams in the Southern Division at the 2022 State B Basketball Tournament. Malta would lose in the quarterfinals to the eventual champion, Three Forks Wolves, and then to the Lodge Grass Indians, but not by much as they fell 56-54 to Three Forks and 67-63 to Lodge Grass. "When you get that close, of course it is disappointing, but overall it was a pretty good finish on the year," Malta...

The Dodson Lady Coyotes retain a young squad this season but welcomes back two seniors in their 2022-23 campaign. Lady Coyote Head Coach Clayton KillEagle was asked how things have been after a couple of weeks of practice. The team welcomes back many from last season including Kataya...
The Malta Wrestling Team welcomes back a team with plenty of experience. Five of ten of this year's team are a part of the senior class. "They are looking tough and working hard against each other," Malta Head Coach Jake French said of the senior class. "They know that it is the beginning of the season and now we are working on technique. I told the team to believe in the process, and in December, it's all about learning. January is where you gain confidence and put the learning to action and Fe...
I suppose there is a reason for everything. I used to think that I was strong, maybe not stronger than most, but stronger than average. I could squeeze out a few reps of 250 pounds on the bench. My deadlift weight was decent but not anything near strongman level. I could squat even more, but lifting lost its luster over time. I had my firstborn son PJ and between the late nights with my handsome boy and work hours, I had no desire to wake up at 4:30 a.m. in the morning. I wish I had stuck with i...

This past weekend, Malta was led...

I must say, I actually cooked up a decent turkey last week. I almost couldn’t believe it, but it wasn’t dry, it wasn’t severely underseasoned, and I didn’t burn glaze to the bottom of a pot. I have only attempted to make turkey a few times and my family has been supportive of my battles. They have assured me that each time I have tried, they have enjoyed it, but I simply was not proud of my turkey. This year was way different. For one, I didn’t put a lot of pressure on getting it done for Thank...

It seems that things are finally getting better in terms of my double-eye muscle surgery. Last Monday was intense. I was struggling pretty bad throughout the first week of recovery. My eyes were so dry and irritated that I couldn't keep my eyes open for long amounts of time. After not being able to work for a few days after my surgery, I forced the issue on Monday. I have been trained to work through nearly anything on Monday. I believe the only Monday that I may have missed was during the birth...

A couple of weeks ago, Tara (Shores) Petre, a 2007 Malta High School graduate, made the Bozeman Daily Chronicle's Top 20 Under 40 list last October. The PCN caught up with Petre to talk about her career, what she remembers of her hometown, and how being from Malta may have helped her in her current world. "That was a little bit of a humbling experience," Petre said of making the Top 20 Under 40 list. "Some of those people were involved in the nomination process, so it was humbling but also very...
I have to admit that I wasn’t as ready for my eye surgery as I thought! Last Tuesday, I went under the knife to fix my lazy eye, something that I have had since I was born. I had a surgery to help it when I was in high school, but a person typically has to go through a couple of them to correct the eye. I admit that the surgery isn’t life or death but it is annoying as a reporter or person when I try to make eye contact and a person looks over their shoulder, as if to gesture “is he looki...

The season came to a cold and windy end for the Malta Mustangs football team as they lost 48-14 to the Jefferson County Panthers at Mustang Field last Saturday, November 5. The wind was in the low 50s with gusts of over 70 mph in Malta, and though Malta's offense struggled to score, Malta Head Coach Nick Oxarart didn't use it as an excuse. "Besides the 50 mph winds that limited a large part of our offense, Jefferson's size, strength and speed were ultimately what became too much to overcome on...
On Friday, October 21, two Phillips County women became official American Kennel Club (AKC) groomers, thanks to the effort and expertise of Laura Pankratz, owner of Little Mutt Groomin' Hut in Malta.
