Mark Foss, Whats on Marks Mind|Mar 16, 2022

Well, thank heavens daylight savings time has started. I don’t know how we would survive without that. I always feel cheated with the spring forward. Going back an hour doesn’t seem to bother me as much. I will never complain about an extra hour of sleep. This is a good time of year if you’re a sports fan. It’s March Madness time for both the boys’ and girls’ college basketball teams. The national college wrestling tournament is coming up. The Masters is just around the corner, and all of the spring sports are starting at all age levels. Oh, an...

  • What's On Mark's Mind?

    Mark Foss, Thoughts on Things|Mar 9, 2022

The world news is all talk about Russia invading Ukraine. I truly believe that Putin has lost his mind. I saw a cartoon drawing of Putin and Biden sitting across from each other a few weeks ago. Putin is playing chess while Biden is playing checkers. After what I’ve heard about this invasion, I believe chess is out the window. One of them is playing checkers while the other is playing tiddly-winks. This past weekend a large F3 tornado tore across my home state of Iowa. It was on the ground for over an hour, killing 7, including 2 children. My t...

  • MHS Jazz Combo: Night at Jazz Club – Concert #48

    Mark Foss, PCN Staff|Feb 23, 2022

A great time was had by all those who attended the Malta High School Jazz Combo concert last Tuesday night, February 15. Over the short period of time that I have been covering the band/choir concerts, I have come to expect the unexpected. Especially from the band director, Mr. Eric Engebretson. He seems to come up with some very creative things to do for the band. So when the house lights went down and the stage lights came up, the only band members on the stage were Krista Meisdalen at the...

The winner was Finn Witmer, a seventh-grader from Malta Middle School. The runner-up for the competition was Jake Brown, an eighth-grader from Saco. Until the 13th round when Witmer spelled his...

  • I'm not sure what that was, but it wasn't football

    Mark Foss, Thoughts on Things|Feb 9, 2022

After watching what was called the Pro Bowl this past weekend, I will never watch it again. I can understand that none of the very best players in the NFL want to get hurt playing in an exhibition game that means nothing to anyone’s record. An injury in a meaningless game could cost them money, contracts, their career. But let’s be honest, they were in full pads and were basically doing a walk-through. I’ve seen more contact in a flag football game than there was in the “Pro Bowl”. I would much rather they lose the pads and actually play a fl...
