On Friday, April 23, the city of Malta got out and about in their cars and let the good times roll! The weather was a bit on the chilly side, but that didn't stop a large number of people from getting out. There were many different types of vehicles out on the loop. From new cars to old classics, pickup trucks and even one RV! People sitting along the route were waving and trying their best to get everyone to honk as they passed by. Many of the local restaurants and bars were busy throughout...
Since starting this job at the Phillips County Newspaper, I have received a lot of encouragement and positive feedback from many of our readers. For that, I am very thankful. I was very nervous taking this job, mainly because it is something that I have never done before. Nothing like it at all. Not since high school have I written so much. And my teachers back then would probably tell you I didn’t write that much then. I did send my high school English teacher a message, telling her what I was about to embark on. I’m pretty sure she fai...

On March 31, 2021, Gail Cummings retired from the United States Postal service where she had been a mail carrier for 42 years. She had been through five different Post Masters, a lot of vehicles, and a lot of miles. She has a couple of million mile plaques to prove that. She started carrying the mail in 1979. She didn't have a contract at that time, but things were a little different back then. She got into the mail carrying business after her father-in-law had been carrying it since 1954. She...

Each team was allotted 30 wristbands for their teams' spectators. This helped to control the amount of people in each of the gyms, and make the transitions between games run smoothly. The Swishfest Tournament is put on by the Malta Athletic Club...
With everything that has happened, and is still happening, in and around this country over the past decade or so, it makes me wonder, what the heck is going on? Is there one thing that has brought us to this state of chaos, turmoil, and division? I think that it is an accumulation of many different things over a very long period. It reminds me of that game some played as kids, and adults I guess, where one person tells another person something and then that person tells someone else, and so on. By the end of the chain of people, the story is no...
A man named H.H. Nelson who in 1904 had property by Vandalia, between Glasgow and Hinsdale, along the Milk River, and with some other landowners from the Glasgow area formed the Lower Milk River Users Association. Their vision was getting water (liquid gold) from the proposed reservoir west of Saco to Valley County. They spent two years convincing Congress and Teddy Roosevelt for funds to develop the project. "Mr. Heindrick Hans (H.H.) Nelson was born in Denmark, moved with his mother to...

As I sit here writing this, I’m thinking how nice it was yesterday, Sunday, March 28. It was around 70 degrees out and an absolutely beautiful early spring day. And now, one day later, as I look out the window, its 30 degrees, wind is blowing 50 mph, and it’s snowing! I find myself looking ahead to summertime, and hopefully the summer Olympics. I missed them last year. It’s going to be weird not having Michael Phelps in the pool swimming faster than a dolphin, or watching Usain Bolt make everyone else look like they are running in place on th...
While the wind has been atrocious in March the moisture was scarce. You can say that from about July of 2020 to today, total moisture is significantly low. The drought conditions and the potential continuation of lower than normal moisture in the future was the discussion at the Great Northern Wednesday March 31, 2020. Extension Agent Marko Manoukian recently took 20 soil moisture samples with the Paul Brown (developed by Dr. Paul Brown Soil Spiciest with Montana State University in 1981) probe...
