The Malta School Board approved the addition of two sports to the athletic program during their regular meeting on July 14. Boys Cross Country and Girls Wrestling were approved by unanimous vote. Both sports are sanctioned by the Montana High School Association. Boys Cross Country will take place in the fall of the year following the same season dates as Girls Cross Country. The Malta City Council held its regular meeting on Tuesday, July 13, in City Hall at 5:00 PM. The council started off by approving the minutes of the last meeting, the agenda for the nights’ meeting, reviewed the audit committee for payment of claims and approved the June 2021 payroll. Beau Bill of West Glacier and Smith each scored 82 points on their rides and each won $437 in prize money. It was a hot weekend in Malta with the temps reaching triple digits on both days, but that didn't stop the race enthusiasts from speeding down the track at the Hi-Line Drag Strip. Even though the borders aren't open yet so that our Canadian friends can come and join in the fun, there was a good number of cars on the track this weekend. 61 cars on Saturday, and 56 on Sunday. A fun time was had by all who attended the Summer Festival and Crazy Days this past weekend in Malta. Chelsea Headley is the new director of the Phillips County EMS replacing Dr. Edwin Medina who had been in that position for the past 20 years. Headley grew up in the Pittsburgh, PA, area and then moved to upstate New York where she went to high school. A wonderfully entertaining night was had by over 100 individuals at Montana Shakespeare in the Parks performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Drought conditions and grasshopper impact have taken a toll on the small grain industry in Phillips County. However, research and variety development to take on these challenges still go on. 1 years ago- Wednesday, July 6, 2011 Camper Fire Closes Highway Firefighters from the Malta Volunteer Fire Department work to extinguish a camper fire on Hwy. 2, west of the Malta Airport, at noon last Saturday. The fire closed traffic in both directions for approximately an hour. One incident truck and a tanker, along with six firefighters responded in addition to a Sheriff’s deputy and a Montana Highway Patrol trooper. Blister beetles have been confirmed in Phillips County. The beetles have many colors, but the same shape. They can be found with stripes, black and gray (see photo). The beetles get their name by exuding a toxic substance called cantharidin. It causes irritations to your hands if you crush one. The weather was perfect for two full days of points racing at the Hi-Line Dragstrip this past weekend. During the City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 22, the Malta City Council gave the go-ahead to put in motion the acquisition of the old National Guard Armory with a unanimous vote. Mayor Demarais told the council that there is ARPA money, or "Covid money" that will be available to the city for the purchase of buildings that can become the new city emergency building if and when it would be needed. Phillips County EMS Coordinator Rhei Tharp handed out a few plaques this past week to three well-deserving Malta residents. American Legion Riders Chapter 4, Dog Tag Buddies, and Tenacious Dames Riding Club teamed up to spread awareness about suicide in Montana. The Ride for Tomorrow, adding miles to the conversation, was held on Saturday, June 19. It consisted of an Iron Butt challenge and many other summer solstice routes that bikers could ride. The Iron Butt challenge was a 1,000 mile in 24-hour ride circling the state that had about 45 to 50 riders in it, with Malta being one of the stops along the way. The...
