  • It's that time of year again!

    Mark Foss, Thoughts on Things|Aug 25, 2021

Every year, there comes a day that is unlike any of the two hundred and thirty or so days that have come before it. I wake up, get dressed, go outside, and with the first breath taken in my brain automatically thinks one thing. Football. I don’t know exactly what it is. It’s got to be some kind of endorphin. Something triggers my senses. It’s not exactly like how my left knee can tell me when it’s going to rain in four and a half hours. That’s more of an ache. This is a smell, a temperature, atmospheric pressure, I don’t know. But I do know tha...

The Knights of Columbus held their second annual, (we don't count last year because of you know what), BBQ Competition/fundraiser last Saturday. The all-day event, because you don't smoke brisket, or anything for that matter, fast, started early in the morning with teams showing up to select their brisket at 6 a.m. The teams had until 5 p.m. to turn in their finished product. In between those two times, the teams also had another competition of cook's choice that had to be turned in by 2 p.m. Th...

  • A Perfect Night in My Home State

    Mark Foss, Thoughts on Things|Aug 18, 2021

As a kid growing up in a small town in Iowa, there wasn’t a whole lot to do. We were too small of a town to have a swimming pool and the closest one was nine miles away. That’s a bit too far for a ten-year-old to ride his bike, swim all day and then ride back. Believe me, I did try it once. I was completely worn out before I tried to ride back home. Luckily, one of my friends’ dad drove me home with my bike in the back of his truck. The one thing we did have as kids was baseball, and I played it every year. Little League, Babe Ruth, and High Sc...

"How we doing Dodson, Montana?" Asked Reckless Kelly frontman, Willy Braun, as they took the stage Friday night. Getting answers of yells, whistles, and hollers, the Austin, Texas band began their set. With the crowd already getting into the set, Braun said, "This one goes out to all the real American Girls out there." Leading to one of the band's newest songs called American Girls off of the album of the same name. Just saying that brought the already full dance floor in front of the stage up...

1 years ago- Wednesday, August 10, 2011 School officials try to minimize the effects of budget cuts in Malta Despite a budget cut of approximately $120,000 required by a failed voted mill levy, students returning to school in the Malta District on August 17 shouldn’t notice much difference. One change is that libraries at the high school/middle school and elementary school will be under the supervision of one librarian now. A second librarian fell victim to budget cuts, as did two other non-tenured teachers. Supt. Kris Kuehn said the d...

Levi Blom is a native of Butte, Montana. He grew up riding horses and playing hockey. "I was always one to be outdoors four-wheeling, mud bogging, or pretty much anything outside. • Early Takeaways on the Olympics

    Mark Foss, Thoughts on Things|Jul 28, 2021

With the opening ceremony last Friday, the 2020(1) Olympics got underway. The ceremony itself was weird. Nobody was in the crowd except for the countries diplomats and the IOC (International Olympic Committee) members. No parents or fans were allowed, but the politicians of all of these different countries could go. That seems in direct conflict with the message that all of these countries are trying to sell. Do as we say, not as we do. But that’s a whole different article. The IOC has a large list of rules for all athletes to follow. Some o...
