  • LaBrie Top Class C Runner in Missoula

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Oct 2, 2024

Whitewater’s High School XC team completed in Missoula last Saturday in the Mountain West Classic XC meet. This is probably the state’s largest high school XC event bringing in over 3,000 runners throughout the day. These teams consisted of not only Montana teams but Idaho and Washington as well. It is pretty intimidating stepping up to a line of around 500 athletes in one race and knowing you're going to have to battle for your position in the first mile of the race. It’s a whole different aspect of racing that we just don’t ever have to deal...

  • Junior High Penguins Run in Frazer

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Oct 2, 2024

The Junior High Whitewater Penguins headed to Frazer for their final meet last Thursday to compete in the Frazer XC Invite located just South of town along the river. This is a challenging course with long inclines. It is an all-dirt course with one steep long hill and one long gradual hill near the end of the course. We only had two runners compete as we’ve been battling some sicknesses throughout the week. Henson Hellie had a great race, reaching his goal of no walking, and ended at 12:53, cutting two minutes off of his time from the p...

  • NRCS Encourages Planning Now for Conservation Benefits and Future Funding Opportunities

Shilo Messerly, Montana NRCS, District Conservationist|Oct 2, 2024

Montana’s short summer is the perfect time for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to conduct the field inventories and planning needed to develop a conservation plan for farmers, ranchers, and private forestland managers looking to improve their natural resources. Because the timeframe before snow is unpredictable and because the NRCS application ranking period for funding opportunities usually happens in the fall, visit the Malta office now. The local NRCS staff can help to figure out current problems, assess the c...

In 1900, the first doctor who came to Malta was George W. Clay. He was quite young, only 22 when he headed to Montana, but before George came along there were no hospitals or Doctors in Malta, everyone had to go to the closest one which was in Glasgow, and no doctor was nearer to the town. Part of that was due to the new settlement on the Great Northern Railway. It had Saloons, log cabins, and a few more conspicuous residents and Malta had no doctors, so there was no place or even a way for a hospital to be here. However, although there were no...

The First State Bank is one of the oldest businesses in Malta, and we should remember all the awe-inspiring things that this bank has overcome in the first few years it was open. One of the many interesting things about the old First State Bank is that it weathered through all the various panics, droughts, tough winters, and war periods without help from any outside sources and without having to make an assessment on its stockholders. The First State Bank was organized in the year 1903, and R.M. Trafton became Malta’s first businessman; he b...

Kristal Korman, Saco Chamber of Commerce|Sep 25, 2024

The 61st annual Saco Fun Days Labor Day celebration kicked off the evening of Friday Aug. 30th with a community Potluck put on by Robert Plouffe. Close to 70 people showed up for the annual Friday evening dinner and about 25 assorted dishes were brought in by various community members. Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Sep 25, 2024

The Whitewater Penguins headed to Lewistown on Friday, September 20th for the Fergus Invite on Pine Meadows Golf Course. The high temperature of the day was 67 degrees with a nice breeze. There were 30 high school teams competing and 18 junior high teams. It was a large meet with many class A and B teams present. We had two high school runners compete, Shelbi LaBrie and Tyler Scheffelmear, and three junior high runners, Barrett Wasson, Hadley Hellie, and Henson Hellie. The Fergus course is probably in the top 2 hardest courses in the state. It...

Herman George Robinson was one of the finest men in Malta, and his story was more than incredible, so I’ll share it with you. He was born on February 25th, 1865, in New York. He had always envisioned being a cowboy and a cattleman, and in 1884, his dream brought him to Billings at the age of 19. After only a year, he found himself on the alluring prairie we now know as Malta. The changes he brought with him were some of the most marvelous and game-changing modifications we needed. Herman worked on various farms until he was twenty-one when h...

  • My Mission: Better Health Care for Montanans

Tim Sheehy, former Navy SEAL and Republican candidate for U.S. Senate|Sep 18, 2024

It’s clear that Jon Tester is a desperate man doing desperate things, including spreading outright lies, fearmongering, and misleading Montanans—particularly on health care. Here’s the hard truth: our healthcare system is broken. On Jon Tester’s watch, costs are going up, and access is going down. Because of Obamacare, Montanans face higher premiums year after year. We’ve lost access to doctors and health care plans we were told we could keep. More government control has only made things worse. We must make health care more transpare...

The Whitewater Penguins headed to the Havre Invitational on Saturday, September 14th to compete at Prairie Farms Golf Course. It was a nice, cool morning with a little bit of a breeze, so the conditions were great for running. We had four runners compete, Shelbi LaBrie and Sommer Green for high school, and Barrett Wasson and Henson Hellie for junior high. Tyler Scheffelmear could not compete due to some aches and pains; we are managing with rest. The high school girls competed at 10:45 AM with...

1 yrs ago Sept. 17, 2014 Family members came from various parts of the states to help wish Madelyn Anderson a happy 90th birthday. Her favorite food is chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy and before she retired, she was a babysitter. The Senior Spotlight was shining on Lois Winkle, who also enjoyed the movie Downtown Wayne, probably while listening to “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” and working on word search pages. The residents of Dodson met at a special meeting to discuss the proposed monthly water rate increase to pay for the nee...

The Town Pump Charitable Foundation is accepting grant applications for the 2024 “Meals for Backpacks” program, which supports schools, food banks, and service organizations that provide weekend meal programs for Montana school children. “It is 65 hours from the time school is dismissed on Friday afternoon until the bell rings on Monday morning,” the Foundation says on its website. “Often, children in Montana go hungry on the weekends. It is estimated that one in six Montana children live in homes that struggle to keep food on the table.” O...

Carol Jean Young was 13 years old when a life-changing accident occurred. The date was November 8th of 1950, when Carol was at her farmhouse in Wagner with her stepbrother Wilbur (30 years), her brother Dannie (10 years), and her sister Donna (6 years). Wilbur had been lifting a pail of fuel oil to the top of the stove to put more into it. The pail caught against the hot stove and spilled. Immediately the burning fuel was dripping down onto the floor and the fuel had caught on fire, as the Young family started towards the door. While running...

  • Penguins Run in Wolf Point; LaBrie Takes Third Place

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Sep 4, 2024

The Whitewater Penguins have three new runners on the course this season. Our veteran, Shelbi LaBrie, is returning with the addition of Sommer Green (11th), Tyler Scheffelmear (11th), and Barrett Wasson (7th). It's been a fun three weeks leading up to our first race of the year. All four of my runners are so hard-working. They were pretty nervous to compete in their first race, but they did a great job. On Friday the runners competed in 80+ degrees, so it was a hot, miserable one. The Wolf...

  • Malta Gardeners Group Announces Winners

    Mary Shores, For the PCN|Aug 21, 2024

Hi, I was asked to write a bit about our contest in Malta Gardeners Group. We always have really fun things to do in this group and the primary reason for this group is to get people back into gardening and back into the great outdoors. We would also like to get farmers' markets started in this area and get more people starting businesses by selling what they produce. There is nothing more rewarding than growing your own food and teaching the next generation how to grow, cook with, and preserve...
