  • November Update From Sen. Tempel

    Senator Russ Tempel|Nov 20, 2024

On January 6, 2025, the state of Montana begins its 69th Legislative session. In order for that to happen, a number of things come first. Beginning with the elections that many of you either worked on, voted, or ignored, if that was possible. That brings us to this past week in Helena, where I was introduced to new fellow Senators and Representatives at the Session Legislator Orientation. We first met in party training, which included new legislator orientation and training. Republicans then met in a caucus and Democrats in their own group cauc...

Some people don’t believe in ghosts, and some people believe that even peaceful hauntings are demonic entities in disguise. Others believe that ghosts haunt this earth until the day they can be free. Well, I’m going to share a local ghost story, a story I believe. This is about the haunting of the old Moore’s Printing Building. There are a few places in Malta people are sure that are haunted, As I share this one with you, open your mind and glimpse of what could be happening. When people think places are haunted, it often has something to do...

  • Along the Hi-Line in Montana, Recreationists are Encouraged to be Bear Aware

    Marc Kloker, MT FWP|Oct 23, 2024

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks encourages folks to be bear aware, even in the "Hi-Line" area of central and eastern Montana. Many folks are heading into the field for fall hunting, and bears are often very active this time of year as they are looking for high-calorie food sources before hibernation. Bear populations are expanding, and although bear encounters are rare in most of central and eastern Montana, there are known black and grizzly bears in all kinds of habitats along the Hi-Line. This...

1 yrs ago Oct. 22, 2014 ** Correction to last week’s entry about the Mustang football team: Coach Nick Oxarart’s Mustangs have outscored the Wolf Point Wolves 399-19 since 2006. That Friday playing the Cut Bank Wolves, they came away with a win of 32-15. A river was flowing in the middle of several blocks in Malta, due to a crack in the cast iron main near the intersection of South 1st Ave. East and South 7th Street East. The crack left some residents without water for much of Friday. It also required the City Works team a 13-hour day as the...

  • Penguin XC Attends Pride Land Invite

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Oct 9, 2024

The Whitewater Penguins headed to Lockwood on Thursday, October 3rd for the Pride Land Invite. This was a new course for us to attend. We usually go to the Great Falls Invite this week but this worked better for our schedule. Thankfully it was a challenging course that pushed the kids to their limits. We only had two kids competing, Shelbi LaBrie and Sommer Green. This was a small meet with only 22 varsity girls and 23 jv girls consolidated into one race. There were some pretty good competitors with several Billings teams in attendance. The...

  • Senator Tempel: Fall 2024 Article

    Russ Tempel, Senator SD 14|Oct 2, 2024

This past week, we held our final interim Local Government Committee meeting prior to the session starting. We had a report from the League of Cities and Towns. They feel some of the bills passed last session did not take into consideration the input from the League should have had stronger consideration. Their opinion is that these bills infringed upon local control of zoning. Last session we had no less than 56 bills introduced dealing with housing or lack thereof. There is no doubt a housing problem exists. Many of these housing bills ended...

  • LaBrie Top Class C Runner in Missoula

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Oct 2, 2024

Whitewater’s High School XC team completed in Missoula last Saturday in the Mountain West Classic XC meet. This is probably the state’s largest high school XC event bringing in over 3,000 runners throughout the day. These teams consisted of not only Montana teams but Idaho and Washington as well. It is pretty intimidating stepping up to a line of around 500 athletes in one race and knowing you're going to have to battle for your position in the first mile of the race. It’s a whole different aspect of racing that we just don’t ever have to deal...

  • Junior High Penguins Run in Frazer

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Oct 2, 2024

The Junior High Whitewater Penguins headed to Frazer for their final meet last Thursday to compete in the Frazer XC Invite located just South of town along the river. This is a challenging course with long inclines. It is an all-dirt course with one steep long hill and one long gradual hill near the end of the course. We only had two runners compete as we’ve been battling some sicknesses throughout the week. Henson Hellie had a great race, reaching his goal of no walking, and ended at 12:53, cutting two minutes off of his time from the p...

  • NRCS Encourages Planning Now for Conservation Benefits and Future Funding Opportunities

Shilo Messerly, Montana NRCS, District Conservationist|Oct 2, 2024

Montana’s short summer is the perfect time for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to conduct the field inventories and planning needed to develop a conservation plan for farmers, ranchers, and private forestland managers looking to improve their natural resources. Because the timeframe before snow is unpredictable and because the NRCS application ranking period for funding opportunities usually happens in the fall, visit the Malta office now. The local NRCS staff can help to figure out current problems, assess the c...

In 1900, the first doctor who came to Malta was George W. Clay. He was quite young, only 22 when he headed to Montana, but before George came along there were no hospitals or Doctors in Malta, everyone had to go to the closest one which was in Glasgow, and no doctor was nearer to the town. Part of that was due to the new settlement on the Great Northern Railway. It had Saloons, log cabins, and a few more conspicuous residents and Malta had no doctors, so there was no place or even a way for a hospital to be here. However, although there were no...

The First State Bank is one of the oldest businesses in Malta, and we should remember all the awe-inspiring things that this bank has overcome in the first few years it was open. One of the many interesting things about the old First State Bank is that it weathered through all the various panics, droughts, tough winters, and war periods without help from any outside sources and without having to make an assessment on its stockholders. The First State Bank was organized in the year 1903, and R.M. Trafton became Malta’s first businessman; he b...

The 61st annual Saco Fun Days Labor Day celebration kicked off the evening of Friday Aug. 30th with a community Potluck put on by Robert Plouffe. Close to 70 people showed up for the annual Friday evening dinner and about 25 assorted dishes were brought in by various community members. Herman George Robinson was one of the finest men in Malta, and his story was more than incredible, so I’ll share it with you. He was born on February 25th, 1865, in New York. He had always envisioned being a cowboy and a cattleman, and in 1884, his dream brought him to Billings at the age of 19. After only a year, he found himself on the alluring prairie we now know as Malta. The changes he brought with him were some of the most marvelous and game-changing modifications we needed. Herman worked on various farms until he was twenty-one when h...
