  • 2025 Session Week 3 Update From Senator Tempel

    Russ Tempel Senator SD 14|Jan 29, 2025

The Senate has been working through implementing a new computer system these first few weeks. There have been bills scheduled for hearing that did not receive proper public notice for the three days. In my case, I had a notice for hearing on my desk, but the public notice was never completed. In looking into the issue, I found out there are two sides of this new improved system that don’t seem to be communicating. The part the staff uses for input at times does not share with the part you and I see. Therefore, a search for a bill may show up di...

  • 2025 Session Week 2 Update From Senator Tempel

    Russ Tempel Senator SD 14|Jan 22, 2025

After leadership canceled all bills last week, we are now receiving bills in committee this week. With the 3-day public notice required for bill hearings, week two was also a bit slow. For some reason, a bill I had scheduled for week one has been referred to another committee. It is always interesting; the predictable is not always predictable. However, one always predictable thing that did happen was the first bills introduced coming from the work done during interim committees. Most are pre-filed before session start and are typically...

  • Legislative Update

    Russ Tempel Senator SD 14|Jan 15, 2025

As you may have heard, the 69th session did not get off to a very quick start for the Senate. Within 15 minutes of session start, the Senate voted in an amendment to the rules, which was not popular with the leadership, who subsequently put all work on hold. That amendment clarified what the Executive Review Committee was to be responsible for, and made it so the committee only meets on an on-needed basis. This was due to the fact that up until the amendment, the Executive Review Committee’s purpose had not been defined, at least one I could e...

  • December Update from Sen. Tempel

    Russ Tempel Senator SD 14|Jan 1, 2025

Judy and I are getting ready for our move to Helena to begin the 69th session of the Montana legislature. I hope your holidays were filled with family and friends and we wish you the best of the New Year. Our move will be to a different rental than we have been in for the past four sessions. Almost the same story for the landlords; they plan on being gone for the winter months and rent their home to Helena visitors. Many legislators have the same scenario. I have to thank them for that, as there is a shortage of housing in the Helena area. In...
