Spring is here and the doors to the Phillips County Museum opened this week. Take a minute and walk through the museum. There are some great new exhibits and a new wall collage of vintage photos. The hitched quirts are now up and ready to be viewed. Such a great old story of renegades, a shooting, and frontier justice that came to us with the quirts. As always we are open Monday through Saturday 10-5. See you at the museum!...
Hooray – April 1st will be the first day of the season for the Phillips County Museum. Doors will open at 10:00 a.m. and visitors will see quite a few changes from last year. Although we don’t have any April Fool’s Day jokes to play on you the museum is proud to have several new displays to unveil. Did you know that people around the world celebrate Aprils Fools Day? Historically in Italy and France this tradition is known as “April Fish”. To take part one must attach a paper fish to a victims back without being caught! If you are a collector...
It’s fantastic. A wonder to the eyes! You must see them to believe it. The decorated mini trees for the Festival of Trees have arrived at the PC Museum. Each year I am amazed at the diversity and beauty of the trees but I believe this is the best year ever! Come in and meet Mr. Snowman, nativity wonder, a toast to 2016, a origami money tree, gingerbread heaven, etc etc And in addition we have beautiful wreaths, table runners, centerpieces, and other Christmas wonders. Come and join the fun. The trees will be on display from now until D...
History is an amazing thing. Each generation creates their individual history yet if we look back we sometimes find a time in history that is similar to events that this generation feels is uniquely ours. The book “Popular to Papua” is an example of this. The story is set during World War II. It is a story of Montana National Guard’s 163rd Infantry Regiment and how they took part in World War II. (Did you think that Desert Storm was the first time a National Guard Unit was called up?) It’s a story of young men that joined the guard to earn th...
Happy Halloween Everyone! A ghost from the past walked through the PC Museum doors this week. Actually not a ghost but a very interesting man. His family had homesteaded south of Bowdoin in the early 1900’s. His name was Robert Morris. Robert had a few interesting tales to tell of his life choices and the places those choices took him. One of his stories made me stop and think that each one of us are a part of the building of Phillips County. Everyone has unique characteristics or jobs that when put together make this the great county it is! R...
A recent donation to the PC Museum prompted a discussion on fraternal organizations. Different fraternal organizations trace their beginnings back to ancient Greece and Rome. The United States is especially dynamic in these types of organizations where the freedom to associate outside of government regulations is expressly sanctioned by law. A collection of items from the “Victory Knitting Club” proved interesting reading. The club was organized in 1918 during World War I. Their purpose was to provide warm items of clothing for “our soldi...
It’s catch up time here at the PC Museum. All those piles that accumulated over the summer are growing smaller every week! History and genealogy requests continue to come in. A recent request was for postmarks from old post offices in Phillips County and Montana. Phillips County is rich with towns that are no longer in existence. The museum has a very large map of Montana with old town names in its collection. In addition in our gift shop we have a book that lists town’s no longer in existence across Montana. Do you remember “Freewater”? Freewa...
Fall is upon us. I love the beautiful red and yellow fall leaves. In our community fall always brings the Big Flat Annual Meeting. Congratulations to the Big Flat for all it does in our community. The PC Museum hosts a display that was created by the Big Flat several years ago to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of power being delivered to the rural areas of Phillips County. Hats off to those individuals that petitioned their neighbors and received the signatures needed to bring that power to the outlying communities. When the power goes off for...
The PC Museum was thrilled to see Billy Spencer, Harry Vagg, Clara Veseth and Pete Zortman walk through their doors last Sunday. What a treasure to hear the stories these Phillips County residents had to tell. Our thanks to Vance Spencer, Orvin Solberg, Rosemary Veseth and Dr. Jim Curtis for their wonderful portrayals. The Historic Walk is always a great time to hear a bit of history and visit. If you weren’t able to attend this year mark your calendars for next September as plans are underway for next year’s walk. Do any of you remember the...
In two months the 2016 election will be over. Yes, I hear you and agree the negative ads are discouraging. Maybe we should carry on a colonial tradition – on Election Day barrels of liquor were rolled onto courthouse lawns and drinks were offered to woo voters. Would this be a better ploy than the ads?? The PC Museum has a NEW display of “funny” and "serious” political buttons. Also in the display are posters and signs with native names such as Robinson, Campbell, Moore, Whitcomb, and many more. Join the fun and check out our display. Museum...
Mystery Solving Time. What is a huge three foot by four foot, purple in color, was found millions of years ago, has relaxation properties, and is now residing in a case at the PC Museum? Now you really didn’t think I was going to solve the mystery for you! Our doors are open from Monday through Saturday 10-5 and you are invited to come and discover our new addition. Genealogy plays a large part in our day to day summer activities at the museum. The family of Judge Andrew Davidson, former Phillips County Judge and early Wagner inhabitant, was i...
Thank you for attending the 1st Annual Antiques/Collectibles Sale and Quilt Show. It was a success with many people finding treasures to buy. Thanks to the vendors who participated. A special thank you to those who shared their quilts and wall hangings. We continue to have visitors from across the U.S. and Canada. Our hours are Monday through Saturday 10 - 5. Stop in and visit our many displays. Enjoy the upcoming 101st Phillips County Fair in Dodson....
Genealogy research has been keeping the staff busy at the PC Museum this week. A family from Maine came researching a bachelor that lived in the Content area for many years. The only information the family had found was a date of death and the name. Our research library was a fountain of information giving up not only an obituary but also a name of an unknown cousin. The obituary also named the pall bearers and we were able to unite the family and pall bearer for a visit! Thank-goodness for the information that has been donated to the museum...
It was a “gem” of a day Friday, July 10 at the PC Museum. Amateur rock hounds Mitch and Annie Blatter shared their rock, gem, and mineral collection with Phillips County. Hearing of their experiences and seeing the many varieties of rocks I was ready to take to the field and see what I could discover. Historically Montana has long been associated with rocks and minerals. The Montana motto “Oro y Plata” is an indication of the wealth found within our boundaries. To further emphasize our rich mineral and ore deposits Montana is also known a...
Residents from over 30 US states have visited the PC Museum this year! In addition we have hosted international visitors from Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Switzerland, Australia, and France. Visitors comment time and time again about the quality of our exhibits and our museum. Kudos to the resi-dents of Phillips County who give their time, treasures, and support to the museum! Nonresident visitors to the state of Montana in 2015 numbered 11.7 million. And with their visits they dropped 3.6 billion dollars. What amazing figures. The Phillips...
The world is indeed small at times. A family recently visited the PC Museum and were astounded to find their grandfather’s picture in a display case! Gabriel Dumont was a military Commander of the Metis during the North West Rebellion of 1885. As an integral part of the story/display we have in the Museum his picture was featured. His grandson and great grandson were thrilled the Metis story was being told but had no expectations their grandfather's picture would be in the display case of the museum in Malta. What a great experience not only f...
Welcome Tri County Insurance Group to Malta. The PC Museum and Tri County have joined to bring a historic presentation to the PC Museum on June 11th at 10:00. Admission is free for this event. Have you ever wondered when the first insurance policy was issued? History tells us that in ancient Persia the monarch was given annual gifts from various groups under his control. I believe this would qualify as an early form of life insurance! Another early insurance policy was developed by the Babylonians for sailing merchants. If a merchant received...
Memories….Tissue covered floats, Queen Candidates, marching bands, children’s parades. Recently a DVD with Malta parades, Farmers Day dinners, car unveilings, and Phillips County memories was given to the PC Museum. What a gold mine of history the DVD has. Stop in and spend a few minutes watching the DVD on the brand new 42 inch TV the family also donated. A big thanks goes out to the Dobson family for their generous contribution to the PC Museum. Museum doors are open Monday through Saturday 10-5....
May and Graduations seem to go hand in hand. Congratulations to the seniors of Phillips County. Doors at the museum have been swinging open and shut with schools from near and far. Introducing kindergarten classes to “Elvis” and Kid Curry has been a great experience. The doors to the museum have also welcomed visitors from as far away as Holland during May. The PC Museum is also getting ready to welcome the graduates from 1960 to 1969. Stop by and see the exhibit of the 60’s and walk down memory lane. Doors are open Monday through Satur...
The PC Museum doors are open for the summer season and already we have had visitors from 15 states, Canada and Holland. The staff is enjoying the opportunity to share our cowboys, Native American artifacts, and dinosaurs. Visitors are amazed at the wonderful collection that our small museum is able to offer for view. The PC Museum and Historical Society are beginning to make plans for an Antique/Collectible Sale in July. To avoid any confusion this IS NOT a sale of items out of the museum collections. It is a fundraiser for the museum and if...
What do we think when we see The Beatles, The Twist, LSD, zip codes, the Andy Griffith Show, and John F. Kennedy. Well the 1960’s of course. National history and Phillips County history combine as the PC Museum highlights the 1960s decade in a new exhibit. As Malta gears up for the 1960’s Decade Reunion stop over and see if you recognize any of the faces that will be visiting Malta in June or those of long time Malta residents. Thank-you to Marge Clausen for your help with the exhibit. Donated items are rolling through the door and provide opp...
Have you ever seen a “Jaw Harp?” A Phillips County Historical Society member brought one in to the museum last week hoping we might know what the small object was used for. Thanks to a customer standing at the counter we identified the object quickly. Ralph Korman was visiting the museum and he actually gave a concert using the Jaw Harp! What fun! You just never know what will walk through our doors! The museum is always accepting new items for our collections. If you have an item that could be donated contact the museum at 654-1037. The doo...
The doors to the PC Museum are open and the staff is excited to start a new season. Please stop by and see the “gigantic” display of Malta Collectibles. Do you remember any of the following? Rhoads West, Tastee Freeze, Dorothys Cho Cho Café, Adelines World, Langs Bar, Arcade Café, Malta Standard Garage. These are just a few of the names found on the variety of Malta items. Looking at these objects gives us an idea of the various industries/businesses historically found in Phillips County. The PC Museum strives to keep our history alive and t...
Signs of Spring are arriving in Phillips County. Babies calves playing on the prairie, early flowers showing their heads, and last week we celebrated Ag Day at the City Hall. Thanks to all her make this celebration possible. The answers to our 'I.D. the item game are': a corn sheller which would remove dried kernels from the corn cob; an aluminum hot water bottle; a buggy stopper (please ask Ralph Korman just exactly how that worked); and a wash day agitator. Thanks to all who played. Grand news for the PC Museum! Doors will open for the...
It’s “ A Wonderful World” – at least in Phillips County. Once again your support has helped the PC Museum to have a great year. The saying goes “It takes a village to raise a child” and I believe it takes “A county to support a museum”. So many ways everyone helps - those who bought a birthday present at the gift shop, those who donated a treasured item, those who volunteer their time to the museum, those who help with the H.G. Robinson House & Garden, those who buy a membership, those who faithfully attend our events, those businesses who...
