  • Woolen Hemp Mill, Hi-Line Kitchen Host EMS/EMT fundraiser and BBQ

    Krista Fahlgren, PCN Editor|Oct 7, 2020

It was a beautiful day for a BBQ on Saturday when Malta’s newest business, Woolen Hemp Mill, and Hi-Line Kitchen, and many other local businesses teamed up to raise over $2,500 for Malta’s Emergency Medical Services and Technicians. Thayne and Michelle Mackey know more than most how important Emergency Medical Services are in Phillips County. It’s been four years since Thayne lost his left hand while working at his wool mill, and just last month their son Oren suffered serious injuries while competing in a rodeo. “That’s just first and the l...

  • Villa Theatre Reopens, Thanks Sponsors

    Krista Fahlgren, PCN Editor|Oct 7, 2020

When The Villa opened its doors on October 2nd, they did it knowing that they could keep them open for the entire month thanks to some generous local businesses. "We had just been throwing around the idea of asking businesses to sponsor tickets like the pool did this summer when Katie Brown called and said the RCAN wanted to sponsor 15 tickets and challenge other non-profits and businesses to do the same. From there, it just spread like wildfire, the next thing we knew, each showing in October...

  • Old Milk River Bridge at Trafton Park may see new life on trails

    Krista Fahlgren, PCN Editor|Sep 30, 2020

Fallon Handley was celebrating her wedding anniversary in Fort Benton when she got the idea. "I fell in love with their repurposed pedestrian bridge, and I wanted to help create something like that in our community," she said. "I've always liked the bridge at Trafton since I moved back and started using the (MaltaTrails) trails," she said. The bridge, which serves as the trailhead for the Trafton Trail, has long been impassable. The decking was removed years ago and only the impressive steel...

  • Auntie K starts chasing you, and then Apologizes And Various Other Things

    Krista Fahlgren, PCN Editor|Sep 30, 2020

The number one question I’ve been asked since starting at the PCN has been whether or not we would bring back the “People on the Street” feature, made famous by the legendary Anti Mary Ann Dooner, and later, the infamous John Degal. Honestly, you have no idea how much this idea tickled me because I started practicing for that very job fifteen years ago. It’s how I met Kathryn Hofer. One night, for some reason, I felt the need to walk around with a clip-board, (or was it a stack of bar napkins? It’s hard to say.) randomly asking people, ...

  • Malmend takes Top Prize at Craig Mangis Memorial

    Krista Fahlgren, PCN Editor|Sep 16, 2020

Emotions were as high as the flags when the lights came on at the Trafton Park Arena Saturday for the Craig Mangis Memorial Rodeo. One flag, in particular, had special meaning, having been handmade by Craig to honor the long tradition of cowboying on those very grounds. Jerey McEwen, President of the Trafton Park Committee is the guy to blame for all of the excitement and emotion of the weekend's events. "I guess I was in the right place at the wrong time," he said. "I went in to start a...

  • And Various Other Things

    Krista Fahlgren, PCN Editor|Sep 9, 2020

Who Are We Right Now? Last week, I talked about how the paper should be a reflection of our past, present, and future. I’ve been thinking about how much things have changed here just in the last 15 years. As I was looking up population facts, it occurred to me that I still hadn’t filled out my census. Not only do we need to take the time to fill out the census so we can track our population, but Montana also relies on an accurate Census to provide critical funding for schools, health care, and highways, and it determines the state’s share...

  • Larry Simpson honored as Grand Marshall of 2020 Saco Fun Days

    Krista Fahlgren, PCN Editor|Sep 2, 2020

Larry Simpson has ridden in every Saco Fun Days parade, except for one, maybe two. One year he had to "go train the Wagon Train" and there might have been a knee surgery one year but that one doesn't count. It did take two years to "train the wagon train," but the second time they came right through town with the parade before heading onto Malta, so he made both. At 83 years old, Larry is as handsome and charming as ever. He still works at branding time. "I'd guess he hauls more to the fire...

This year’s Saco Fun Days, “Ropes, Wrenches & Reels: Celebrating Our Rural Way of Life” might be a bit different this year, but given some extra safety measures, fun times will still be had. “We are doing everything we can to keep everyone safe and healthy,” reports Saco Chamber of Commerce President Lacey Dee Beil. “We will have sanitation stations set up, and all of the events will be held outdoors in front of the bar, hotel, and café.” The weekend kicks off with a Cornhole Tournament at 7 p.m. on Front Street and food will be available at t...

  • Don't forget what you already know

    Krista Fahlgren, PCN Editor|Sep 2, 2020

Hi, I’m Krista. I have been struggling with a way to start this column without introducing myself because you already know me, and if you don’t, you will read enough Grandpa Swede anecdotes in the coming weeks to figure me out soon enough. But I really don’t want to talk about me, I want to talk about us. I want to talk about who we are as a community, and who we have been, who we want to be. More than that, I want to tell you who we want to be as your newspaper. The first day that I met with Mark and Pierre we talked about how a paper is ba...

    Krista Fahlgren, PCN Editor|Aug 26, 2020

Voters in Montana, especially in counties with smaller populations like ours can be assur...

"With the challenges of COVID 19, our usual fundraisers such as concessions and our annual BBQ weren't feasible this year, and so we had to find a different avenue," said Rhei Tharp, Malta EMS Coordinator. "Many people don't realize that we are a self-funded organization and that our crew is staffed by volunteers, aside...
