  • Quick Thoughts From the Quiet Corner

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Nov 27, 2024

Hats off to the Malta Mustangs, but hold on to that set of gloves and head-warmer, and congratulations as the STATE CLASS B FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS! What a season of memories, ups and downs, and steady progress to get to where that goal was attainable! Now, we wind down another year on the calendar within the next four weeks and it is, also, a time of reflection before Ol’ Man Father Time comes around with the reaping tool, wiping out another year. With any fortitude and strength, you have made progress this year and met some goals you set for yours...

  • Coming Soon... Daughter of the Plains

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Nov 20, 2024

To say the event on Friday evening had "standing room only" is accurate, considering the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum was designed for viewing, not sitting. Douglas Cunningham, who wrote and filmed "Daughter of the Plains" arrived in Malta on Thursday evening to prepare for the open house at the museum on Friday. With approximately 60 in attendance, the space was quickly filled. Board members and volunteers hosted a "wine and dine" reception for the gathering. In conjunction, GPDM had a 50/50...

  • 2024 Election Results and Recap For Phillips County

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Nov 13, 2024

The lights were on into the wee hours of the morning at the Phillips County Clerk and Recorders office on Tuesday evening and into Wednesday morning, as they were in June during the primary election. The general election kept the workers until about 1 a.m., because as like across the nation...voters were curious as to how the election results were adding up. This appears to be one of the years when voters wanted to make sure they voted...whether their selection for candidates for the various...

Bright and early on Monday morning, veterans made their way to the Malta High School cafeteria, where they were greeted by young ladies as school representatives and Principal Shawn Bleth. At short notice, due various scheduling conflicts and other interruptions, the veterans were invited to come, visit, share and enjoy time with the youth. About 15-20 were able to make the trek and each enjoyed the decorated venue as well as the delightful youth. Malta High School has hosted breakfast the last...

  • Banners Honor Our Veterans

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Nov 6, 2024

While some were snuggled beneath warm quilts or had their hands wrapped around a hot cup of morning coffee, Eric and Delsi Witmer were busy chattering their teeth to keep from freezing. With a crisp breeze feeling like it was blowing off an iceberg, the Witmer's were out putting up the third series of banners honoring Phillips County's Hometown Heroes, those that answered the call to serve their country through the various branches of the military. This project is how the Witmer's chose to...

  • A Day to Remember and Honor

    Kari Hould, Karis Quiet Corner|Nov 6, 2024

Locally, before the breaking of the dawn’s early light, volunteers from the local Volunteer Fire Department and other volunteers will be methodically placing the nation’s colors around town at businesses, while some aren’t even aware that the flags will be flying in honor of all those who have served in the military. Monday, November 11th is national Veterans Day, or Armistice Day, as some remember it from way back. The turmoil of the world will be set aside for the 24 hours that the U.S. flag is posted, as we remember our men and women, who p...

  • Fire in Zortman Leaves Family Homeless

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Oct 30, 2024

No one likes to hear the sound of a fire alarm going off, especially if one lives in the small close knit community of Zortman, where one would know a fire would mean someone you know is not having a good day. So it was, Tuesday the 15th of October, as Malta’s Volunteer Fire Department received the call of a fire in Zortman; tankers and pumpers were south bound in rapid fashion. Located over 47 miles south of Malta via Hwy 191 South, the distance usually takes about an hour to get there. Luckily, except for the short distance into the former m...

  • Looking Forward as Time Turns Back

    Kari Hould, Karis Quiet Corner|Oct 30, 2024

This Saturday evening, as you prepare to settle in for the night, which for “some” of my friends means placing your dentures in water, and making one last passing of the refrigerator and bathroom…Montana will join many of the states across this great nation in the ritual of “FALL BACK” for the end of implementing daylight savings time. Whether you care for it or hate it…it is inevitable. We adjust, because we are like that. Now, I didn’t say we were happy with it, but we comply. As this goes to press and then hits the airwaves and streets o...

  • Cold Case: Closure At Last

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Oct 23, 2024

The day was October 10, 2024. It was a day that Kristy Mooney had looked forward to for over 40 years. Though it took four decades, the matter was over. It was on that day, in a District Court room in Rufugio, Texas, that Gordon Parsons made a formal plea changing his original plea of not guilty in the matter of the death of Robert Dale Mooney, to guilty in court and was facing sentencing. Robert was the father of Kristy, she was two years old when her dad was murdered. Parsons and Arnold Huskey had escaped the Wyoming State Penitentiary on...

The brightly colored and sturdy structure includes steps up to the base that has a bright red roof. There is a play area and a hands on manipulation center. There are peep-n-seek spots with open room to let the young imaginations open up and run wild. The assembly also has a slide that won't pinch, burn or...

1 yrs ago Oct. 22, 2014 ** Correction to last week’s entry about the Mustang football team: Coach Nick Oxarart’s Mustangs have outscored the Wolf Point Wolves 399-19 since 2006. That Friday playing the Cut Bank Wolves, they came away with a win of 32-15. A river was flowing in the middle of several blocks in Malta, due to a crack in the cast iron main near the intersection of South 1st Ave. East and South 7th Street East. The crack left some residents without water for much of Friday. It also required the City Works team a 13-hour day as the...

The Malta Assembly of God Church can truly attest to their church having a special "Blessing," as they recently welcomed their new pastor, Pr. Tonya Blessing. Pr. Blessing and her husband, Chris, bring a renewed and strengthened bond to the community and are looking forward to meeting more people in the community. The Blessings moved to Malta, having spent some time in Columbus, Montana, so the transition hasn't been too much of a change. She said they have experienced the Montana winters so...
