We have had some sun which has taken away some of the snow, but it is staying cold. We like it better when winter moves in more slowly. It actually got a little muddy in places on Friday for a while. Some cowboys were moving some cattle around on Friday to fresh pasture. Little cool job. Polly Solberg had some therapy on Thursday to "put" her bones back on straight! Hope it works. I went to Choteau this week with a load of furniture, etc., and found myself snowed and iced in. The first bad storm of the season moved in, and roads were icy and dangerous all over the state. So, I stayed for several days for sunshine and melting roads. It remains cold though. The weather has taken a downgrade to show us winter is coming, and it sure brings out the jackets and coats. The Gospel Jamboree was held this weekend in Malta. Polly Solberg was among those helping with it. Our first frost of the fall last week saw a low of 21 degrees on Thursday evening. Several of the days have been quite cool. Polly Solberg attended some of Malta’s sports activities at the golf course on Saturday and attended church at Elim on Sunday. She said she noticed the lower temps. The days are certainly getting much shorter and colder. Friday was a nice day followed by cold and windy on Saturday. Sunday was cold and windy, then we had cold rain. The fog was so heavy early Sunday morning that you couldn’t see a block away and then it moved away a little. Soon it came back heavier and thicker than before, I could hardly see my neighbor’s house. By noon the sun was shining, and it looked pretty good out. It was sure damp all day though. The days are very noticeably shorter now and the trees are getting yellow leaves in places, so it is reminding us that fall is coming. Also, our nights are very cool. It all seemed to happen so quickly that we can hardly keep up. The Kirkaldie brothers pulled up with their racehorses just as we were leaving after lunch the other day, so we were able to see some nice-looking horses. Winner’s even. We have been having some pretty good weather-----couple of little showers------a beautiful sunset on Sunday evening. Dora Henry had visitors this week, daughters of Elmer's, Sgt in the Marine Corps all through Iwo Jima and their occupation of Japan following World War II. Vicky and her husband were from Novi, MI, Rosalinda and Cristy from the Chicago area and Heather from St. Louis. The weather has still been getting quite warm in the daytime----some nights have been cooler. This week we have been getting more smoke from the fires into the valley. School is in full swing again, so kids are busy. Mac Minugh was in town to visit his kids. The Town had quite a bit of excitement with the bomb scare at the school. We have been having hot days again, but some mornings are downright cool. School has started again so things seem busier, so watch for the young ones while driving in town. We received some rain on Sunday so it should spruce it up again for a while. It also cooled it down from the terrible heat we were having and soon we will be wishing for it again. We have been having some more hot weather with little rain. We did have a quick shower that gave us a good dunking for just a little while. All this week is expected to be hot with Thursday’s high expected at 99. School will be starting next week again--------seems like a short summer off. The Fair has been in full swing, and I have even enjoyed some of the concerts sitting on my back porch. Congratulations to all the ribbons and awards the kids received. They work long and hard with the animals and do a good job. And of course, the Indian Relay Races are always so nice to watch and enjoy. We experienced a short-lived weather disturbance on Sunday with lots of thunder, lightning, and wind but not much rain. We were hoping it would go ahead and rain, the ground top dries out so fast and cracks. As much rain as we were having it is surprising the grass is so dry. Be nice to have all the rain out of its system so as not to disturb the fair. They have really been busy at the Fairgrounds---at the end of the week it will be a beehive of activity. Lots of smoke in the valley all this week from the Canadian fires. They seem like to be burning forever. We had a couple of good thunderstorms this week and one put down a good lot of water. Heard the Harb community east of Malta really got soaked. All in all, things have been pretty quiet. Vivian Bruckner and her sister-in-law were up to visit Polly Solberg and helped her for the day. We haven't had any rain showers for a while, but it has been getting hot in the afternoons. More typical July weather than we have been having. Polly Solberg said her temp read just over 100 today. Summer school is over and so is basketball camp, so things have quieted down again. Now everyone is preparing for the fair. Several rains have kept it green and nice----things are growing fast--including the weeds. Vivian Bruckner took Polly Solberg to Great Falls for medical treatment on Thursday and they spent the night with Sid and Merrimae Solberg. Polly had lots of company on Saturday, as Larry Solberg, Ruby Butterwick, Evan Jones, and Paul Mortenson called on her during the day. No writing made it into the paper last week, so we'll start again. The main item last week was the lady attacked by the Pit Bull. Haven’t heard anything but hope she is doing well. Memorial Day has passed one more time. The cemeteries looked good although it looked like there were fewer flowers around as usual. The weather has warmed up so well. It seemed that the trees looked almost dead one day and are now all leafed out and everything is so green. The tulips are drying up already and the iris’ and lilacs are coming out with color. It is wonderful that nature does its own little thing all the time. Many relatives, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends came from all over on Friday to say goodbye to lifelong resident and farmer, Willard Mortenson. Everyone had something nice to say about him and many stories were told of association with him and what a kind man he was. He will be missed.
