2-13. Greetings to all my readers and special thank you to the veterans past and present! Our freedoms are something that we take for granted, but these men and women have fought for them! Thank you! Last week we had some snow on the ground, then on Friday it was all gone, but Saturday a northern wind blew in and we ended Sunday with about 4 new inches of fluff! But the clouds dissipated, and the moon shone brightly as the temperature dropped to negative numbers. Just a taste from Mother...

Let me just go on record right now, this changing time kicks my butt! I did remember to change my clocks, but my brain takes more time to change. Many cattle trucks have been traveling on the highways this week as the ranchers wean the calves and send them on their way to “college” or to work! Cindy Clark was an international traveler this week. She and her daughter Becca Engum of Great Falls spent a few days in Calgary. Cindy reported that they found several ethnic eating establishments to try...

Autumn is here for sure, or is it winter? The high temperature has been in the sixties or fifties, with the lows in the teens and low twenties. The wind blew so hard that all the leaves blew off the cottonwood and the brown pine needles blew into the gutters on the garage! We haven't had much moisture this week. Hunting season is upon us, too. If you're hunting on a property that doesn't belong to you be sure to ask permission. Many Loringites attended the funeral of Leroy Dyrdahl on Thursday....

Can you believe it? I’m in Arizona for a few days and reporting from my brother’s home. It is cool in the mornings and then it heats up to the low 90’s for the afternoon! Debbie Richau traveled to Scottsdale with me on Thursday. Friday we were invited over to my niece’s home for dinner. I enjoyed seeing her home and visiting with Regan and Hudson! Then on Saturday, we went out for dinner and went over to watch a Patsy Cline tribute concert! Crazy and Lonesome Am I were two songs that brought...

Happy Columbus Day! It sounds like the Heritage Day celebration was successful in Malta. Jay and Whitney Blunt were among the celebrants from out here. We had our second snowstorm on Monday and I'm hoping it's the last for a few weeks! I've had two great horned owls in my trees for a few days. The soft hoot in the evening and mornings is reassuring to me. I’ve seen several Hawks raiding the branches of my pine trees too! Bob and Kathleen Lumsden of Absorkee visited with Pete and Carol Lumsden o...

Happy October, all my autumn people! Let's hope that we have a month of wonderful fall weather before winter visits again! I've had two raucous blue jays in the yard the last couple of days! Very pretty blue and loud voices! This morning about thirty robins flew in to partake of the bird bath before they start on the long trip back south! What a great weekend I had! My nephew, Ross Cowan drove up from Denver with his dog. They stopped in Billings to visit David and Brandie Stordahl and pick up...

Wow! This will be a September to remember! Lots of snow, wind, rain and pretty much a mess for the ranchers and farmers! The snow was so wet and heavy that it broke two branches off my trees! It made me sad, but happy they didn't fall on my house! I went over to Whitewater on Tuesday, visited Lu Besel and Jeanie Green. Then I went over to the volleyball game against Malta junior high! The North Country Mavericks won both games! I was pleasantly surprised at how improved the junior high girls...

Happy last day of summer and welcome to autumn! We have had an awesome week with the weather bouncing around a little. Hopefully, the crop can be harvested before the freezing temps of next week! Heather Simonson was the hostess for Loring Woman's Club on Wednesday. We had a luscious salad dinner with only one member absent. The working committee for the Loring Dance was set, and ticket sales for the raffle. Dixie Stordahl volunteered to be the treasurer and was accepted. A special guest Char Wa...

Our area was saddened again by the death of Marie Wasson on Thursday. Her funeral was on Monday. She lived on the North Bench Farms the whole time I was growing up! Then she and her husband moved to Malta. David Clark and his grandson Ryan celebrated their birthdays together at the home of Kenny and Brenda Clark with a great dinner of homemade pizza and cheesy bread and birthday cake! Guests at the gathering were Grandma Janice Erfle, Tracy, Hannah, and Austin Hanley, Kyle, Barrett and Avery...

Congrats to Beau Simonson and the Mustangs on their recent win over Roundup! Kia Wasson played volleyball on Friday and Paige Wasson traveled with the junior high Mavericks all the way to the eastern side of our state! Also congratulations to Hannah Hanley who has qualified for state in cross country already! The northern lights were very active this week. I'm happy I got to see them dance! Janet Berg saw me at the Historic Walk and said she'd gone out to the Scandia Church and was thrilled at...

And just like that, August is gone and September is here! The buck deer are starting to lose their velvet, the kingbirds have migrated and the grass has gone to seed! Wednesday, as I was waiting for dinner with the paleontologist crew, I visited with Davy Dunbar and Dixie Moore. Dixie was on the way to the wagon train to drive Scotty's little buggy on the trip. Davy was going to support her as an outrider! It would be an emotional but exciting trip! Also visited with Shorty Seel and his lovely...

The rainy season hit us like a huge wave from the ocean! Combining in the area has ground to a halt! The crops had been producing a nice yield, but I'm not sure how the average will end up. I always like to stay positive, so at least we are able to harvest. Some people are using this downtime to build fences or rebuild them. The goldfinches are trying out my sunflower seeds. The birds are so bright yellow with black caps and have a soft song. Fran Compton of Douglas, Alaska, has been my house...

What a week! Sympathy to the Glenn Compton family and to the Justin Lucas family! Two huge funerals for the week. So much sadness. I spent the week house/dog sitting in Billings. I picked up Fran Compton from the airport and we drove up to Malta for Glenn's funeral. Fran is Glenn's niece. We have been friends for life! She stayed at my house while I went back to Billings. Fran is reconnecting with the community where her grandparents lived. On Sunday I drove back from Billings and met Fran and...

What a week of summer weather! High temps and plenty of wind! And even at night, it didn't cool down much. But that is what summer is in Montana! Only one night of warm temps and that may be more noticeable to me this summer since I don't have many windows open. Lightning and thunder for a couple of nights, too. No fires started so far and still no solid rain, praise the Lord! The baby robins are really demanding of their parents! Their little squawk is not so pleasant right now. But it does get...

Oh, the wonderful variation of weather in Montana! One day this week I'm sure the temperature was over 100 degrees, windy, and just miserable to me. But then the next day was in the low 80’s, still windy, but tolerable! And now this morning it was 47, no breeze and sunny! Just a tad chilly! I'm not complaining, I'm commenting about the lovely changing weather! The Loring Sunday Funday was another success! It was kinda windy for the water slides to begin with but then a place was found with s...

Much of the hay barley has been swathed and huge bales are being dropped in the fields as the farmers store up the feed for winter use. To me, it looks like a great year, if the swathes can get baled before the wind blows the hay around or the rain hits it. The grain crops are starting to turn golden, won't be long now until those big combines are knocking down the grain and it'll be in storage granaries until needed. I do enjoy the different colors of green that the crops show. The crop tour...

Just the typical summer days for this week, hot, high temps in the 90’s then afternoon or evening storms that don't last long but still make me worry! Today for instance, I was driving back from Turner all the while watching a big black storm cloud to the south west! Right when I was coming out of the sag about two miles from home the wind and dust came up, with tumble weeds flying above my car and a little rain. I thought it might be a tornado or wind event, but it only lasted about 10 m...

These young people attend many different universities, including, MacAlister, Smith, Amherst, Colorado, Pomona, Union, and Oberlin. All of the students are considering a geology or paleontology major and this trip will help them decide. The first week was spent in the lab at MacAlister and these next weeks will be spent in the...

Happy July! And what a mixed up Mother Nature we have! The high temperatures ranged from the low 59’s to low 90’s! The rain was spotty, but where it rained, it was a deluge! We did not get terribly huge amounts at Loring where I live, but just five miles away it rained .8 inch. The Little Cottonwood Creek must have gotten a downpour because the gully by the highway was still running 3 hours later! Rain, it's a good thing. I've heard a few people complaining that they can't get the lawn mow...

What a wonderful week of summer weather! After the rains of last weekend, the bright sunny days were welcome, but then we'd have a thunderstorm in the afternoons right up until Saturday. The crops grew overnight after that first big lightning and thunderstorm! And don't tell Mick, but I love seeing the blooming peas in his field! Won't be long before a few peas will be included in my lunch! Kenna Joy Slade was baptized into the Lord's family at the Loring Lutheran Church on Sunday. She is the...

The rain came! I don't keep an almanac, but I don't think it has rained as much in June for five years or so. It really was a welcome rain! I've heard that we got more than 2.5 inches! Happy summer! We did not get snow on the summer solstice, but some places in Montana did. The temperatures were in the low fifties and upper forties! Chilly! Rick and Mary Stordahl of Billings pulled their camper into our yard on Friday and stayed until Sunday. David and Brandie, Rocco Stordahl and Jacob Wilcox al...

Lots of baby gophers around now! The grass is growing tall enough it is harder to spot the little buggers! We had a small shower of rain on Thursday. We will be praying for more since the crops look good but if no rain comes the grain won't form in the head! The paleontologists grilled up some supper and invited me to come over last Sunday! Eating with people beats eating alone! Saturday a group of residents from the Sweet Retirement Center in Chinook made a trip to the Great Plains Dinosaur...

Greetings readers of the Phillips County News! The week started out cool but we warmed up by the end of the week to 80+! As someone said we had our two weeks of spring and now it is summer! Most of the ranchers have finished up their branding of the calves and have moved the herd out to the summer pasture. Let's pray for the grass to be plentiful, and the rains to come! I have received so much support from the residents of Phillips County since Tom passed away, I am humbled. Thank you,...

The little song birds are returning by the droves! I saw the flycatchers, white crowned sparrow, eastern and western kingbirds, and lots of different warblers this week! It will be an interesting summer if this many stick around! I love all the songs this time of year when they are establishing territories and trying to attract a mate. I attended Eastern Star on Monday. It was the last meeting of the year. Taylor Hellie hosted the Loring Womans Club at her home in Whitewater on Wednesday! The an...

I know I've been remiss in getting my news into the paper on time. I have it written, but just don't get it sent in. So sorry. The last couple of weeks I've been spending a lot of time with Tom at the Hi-Line Retirement Center. He is receiving good care, and physical therapy, three meals a day. But on the other hand, it is really quiet at my home. I do get to see a few people who I like to visit there, Betty Jo Compton, Debbie Dyrdahl, Lois Waters, who come to visit their loved ones. Bruce and L...
