Carol Lumsden and I went to Havre on Friday to pick up my new glasses which are bifocals. I’m so happy that I can see to read without enlarging all the writing! But I can’t watch TV while I sit in my lounge chair. I’ll get practiced up! We saw 4 bald eagles cleaning up a roadkill close to the overpass on highway 2. I think they are so majestic! I also saw a snowy owl twice this week! They are so white! On Wednesday we had a wind that was like no other and we don’t even live in Kansas! The pow...
The fog was the main thing weather wise this week and the frost that was left was amazing! The heavy frost on the power lines did create a few power outages! Thank you to the Big Flat Co-op for their diligence! Loring Lutheran church will have their annual meeting and pot luck Lunch on February 1. Lu Besel and Dixie Stordahl traveled to Havre on Monday. Dixie had an eye appointment. She also stopped in at Betty Munson’s to pick up a book she wrote! It is very interesting! I’m happy to rep...
Happy new year everyone! I'm wishing a prosperous year for each of you! I saw five bald eagles last week on the way to Malta! I felt like I hit the jackpot! My Amyrilis is blooming and the other one is growing like crazy! They are so beautiful at this time of year! Jupiter is still bright in the west right as it gets dark. The full cold moon ended 2020 brightly! The Slade children spent the week with nana and papa Lumsden. They spent new years eve with the Norville's. The Blunt's worked at the...
Happy New Year to you all! I'm sure you all had a memorable Christmas and are ready for a fantastic new year! We were not privileged enough to see the conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter on the 21st, but we did see it two days later when the two were just a little separated! What a special event to mark the solstice in this pandemic year! Always a sign of better things to come! Christmas Eve guests of Cindy and David Clark were Robert and Becca Engum of Great Falls. Tracy Hanley, and Janice...
Merry Christmas to all! Shout out to a few people in California, Steve Dyrdahl, Doris Hart, and Lorna Knudson! Hope all are well. They all lived at Loring in the past and I know they read the PC News! Also hello to Tim Abney! Two weeks in a row, I've seen a young eagle on the way to Whitewater! Let me make that clear, I was on the way to Whitewater, I think he lived there. It certainly brightened my day! I haven't seen one yet but one of my friends, Cindy Clark called to report that she saw a...
Chilly greetings to you all! The temperature has taken a dive into the teens with lows very close to zero. I know this is just the tip of the iceberg for cold freezing weather, and I'm so thankful I don't have to bundle up to go feed cows! I have seen for myself that the hunters did not get very many deer! I took a drive off the highway and I can't tell you how many deer I saw! I'd estimate about 100-200! Some were white tail and some were mule deer! No moose or elk on this trip! The Loring Wome...
Due to Covid-19 everything is pretty quiet and everyone is pretty much staying away from everyone else. Then with the cold weather to help there is not much visiting or activity in the whole town. Terri Cole and a couple more deliver lunches in from the Center at least twice a week. This is appreciated, especially now when it has been so icy after the slight thaws that we have had. We celebrated Pearl Harbor Day this week to help honor the many brave men who died in the deadly attack in 1941 by...
Happy December! The last month if 2020! It has been an interesting year that's for sure! Hope you readers are well and living a safe life! The antelope are gathering into herds of approximately 100 individuals! I think there are three herds between Loring and Malta. I'm not sure how that translates into weather forecasts. You know, the larger herds the colder, more snow, longer, or is it the other way? I've been watching for the snowy owls but haven't seen any yet. Also I'm hoping to spot some...
If you are lucky enough to have clear skies in the evenings you will be able to see the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn! It is the two brighter objects in the evening sky but not the moon! I saw a bald eagle sitting in the trees just south of my house! I know the farmers don't always look excited to see them, but I am! An eagle flew over when we buried my dad and just hovered in the sky above us! It has been a symbol for me ever since! I had a couple of young blades stop to visit me one...
With all the crazy things we blame on 2020, including the crazy weather, sickness, bad roads, a new case of arthritis, or a bad sliver, it gives me hope and calms me to realize that the cycles of the moon, planets, meteor showers, and even the slow passage of the sun from north to south are still predictable and happening right on schedule! Sympathy sent out from our community to the families of Dorothy Johnson, who passed away Sunday in the Sweet Memorial retirement home! She was a teacher of...
Loring had an awesome week of above normal temps in the 70’s on a few days! Then we were warned that a big snow storm was coming in on Saturday and most of us were busy getting the last minute things done up before the cold weather hit! The snow started about 6 on Sunday morning. I'm not sure how many inches but in some places I've got a foot and a half drifts and in others its just a couple of inches. That's the way we roll here in North Phillips County! It'll be gone by Wednesday and a new s...
1-26. With all the snow and cold temperatures, I keep thinking it's November instead of October! My apologies for November! But I did see that the forecast for this upcoming week is close to 60! Yes, it will be! Somewhere! The sharp tail grouse are coming into the trees at my house more now that it is cold! The trees offer shelter, sustenance, and togetherness. Not concerned with social distancing! Carol Lumsden and Etta Blunt visited with Debbie Dyrdahl one day this week! Debbie certainly...

It seems that the antelope have started gathering into large groups. I saw two larger groups on my trip to Malta on Friday. I went over to Senior Meals on Wednesday. It's always fun to visit with people I don't see very often. Mars is still bright all night! It's reddish. On Saturday the Lumsden family hosted a run in memory of Andrew Flansaas. Jeannie Schroeder, Saige, and Zoey Stordahl drove up from Billings for the weekend. We celebrated Jeannie's birthday on Friday with a meal at Dixie...
On Saturday at 3 p.m., with the temperature in the 20's, a group of runners gathered at Loring to dedicate the day to a loved one who is no longer with us. Andrew Flansaas, son of Michael and Brenda Flansaas, died June 28 in Alaska, leaving a huge space in the family's lives. The mourners from Montana couldn't attend the funeral in Alaska due to the COVID-19 limitations. His cousin Carmen Norville organized the memorial run to bring awareness to suicide and to honor Andrew's life. Andrew was an...
Sorry I missed writing my column last week. I had two beautiful blue jays stop in for a few days! It was fun watching them looking for food and trying the suet feeders! Several people worked at the church spiffing up and others worked on the landscaping. Several boulders were rolled in to act as a barrier so the vehicles will stop before running into the well and lawn. I spent a couple of days in Billings last week with David and Brandie, and Debbie Richau. Rocco’s football team played Laurel i...
What a windy week! My lawn looks gold with leaves from my cottonwood tree! No use raking them yet, still more to fall! I did spot a blue Jay at my waterer this week. They are so blue it’s almost shocking when you see them! I was fortunate to go to the Missouri River for Elk viewing on Sunday and was not disappointed! The guys were really making a fuss and the gals were just being patient! It really is phenomenal how they are really not bothered by people and there were lots of people! Thank y...
After a week of smoky skies from the fires in the west, we had a bit of rain on Saturday night and the skies are much better now. Almost a blue sky, but the horizon still has a smoky look. But so thankful for the moisture! I drove to Billings on Thursday and I'm surprised we have as many deer left alive as we do! The number of blood splats on the highway was amazing! But I still saw a lot of grazing on the side of the road. If all the dead deer are hit by personal vehicles, the autobody people...
The migration of songbirds is in full swing! I've had many goldfinches, yellow-rumped warblers, and sightings of red or yellow-shafted flickers all week. An American kestrel showed up today with several other Hawks. The Loring Woman's Club meets at the Gale Simonson home on Wednesday at 7. Whitney Blunt hosted the bible study this month. Six ladies attended. The Blunt family helped cousin Beckett Blunt celebrate his birthday in Malta on Saturday! Cindy and Dave Clark helped Robert Engum celebrat...
Fall is sneaking in like an insidious habit. The prairie is very dry, which is good for the harvest, but bad for the fire danger! Our temperatures this week saw close to triple digits, but on Sunday the cold front moved in and the temps dropped to 45! And surprise, it rained about a half-inch! Rod and I drove to Billings on Thursday. Near Roundup we saw smoke boiling up over the horizon. A huge fire was burning in the rough terrain south of the town. Several homes and outbuildings were...
Wishing all the school kids a successful year along with the teachers, cooks, and all the support staff! Malta starts this week and most of Whitewater started last week. A huge wind blew through Loring and northern Phillips County on Thursday! I have never seen the pine trees bend so far and the noise was scary! Lightning was prevalent but I have not heard of any fires starting here. There was one north of Whitewater but it was before the wind and the neighbors got it out quickly! When out...
The dog days of summer are here! So hot during the day but cools off nicely at night. My sunflowers are attracting the little goldfinches and the red-winged blackbirds. I saw a family of sharp tail Huns one day but haven't seen them since! The red tail Hawks and marsh Hawks have to eat too they say! Pete and Carol Lumsden stopped to visit on Sunday. They have been busy with grandkids and farming. Almost ready to start combining. I saw the yellow school bus go by this morning! I pray that the sch...
The cooler nights are making me dread the coming winter. I do love the cooler temps, but not anxious for winter. Hard to satisfy, I know! The cooler weather makes it perfect for canning the garden produce, baking bread, and cookies! Congratulations to Ruth and John Flansaas on their 67th wedding anniversary! Now that's an accomplishment! Alan and Connie Wasson also celebrated their anniversary this week. An amazing 50 years for them! My sunflowers are starting to ripen and attract red-winged...
And now it is August! The month of harvest, one of the most stressful times of the year for the farmer/rancher! Some people love harvest. It means a less stressful time and the fruits of all your hard work now can be realized. Other people don't like it so much. They think about the end of summer and the beginning of the cruelest time of year, winter! Several people have commented about the saga of my flycatcher! I'm happy to report that all four babies fledged on Tuesday! They flew over to the...
The Loring community was hopping this past weekend! Most everyone was involved in one of three weddings! Levi Harms and Casandra Stenvik were married at the Johannesen ranch north of Loring with a reception at the Loring Hall. Tiffany Salveson got married at the Scandia Church south on Malta, so the Lumsdens and Blunt families were down there. And Kiana Simonson’s wedding in Huntley was attended by all the aunts and uncles and many friends! Congratulations to the three couples! On Sunday we c...
