Every once in a blue moon I’m surprised by the random kindness that has come forth for no reason! I had a tourist come into the Great Plains who told me about her morning. She had a flat tire on the highway and a gentleman stopped to ask her if she needed help. He changed her tire and helped her get a new tire ordered. She was singing the praises of Bill Rock! I'm happy that she found a kind person to help her out! I hope that if I ever need help I'll have a kind person help me out! Another k...

Mother Nature gave us two nights of rain this week. In Loring, unofficially “official” the total rainfall was 2.5 inches! A lot of the low spots were full of water. The ditches up at Jason's are full! It's just a very good feeling to have rain when we need it! In my flycatcher’s nest are five eggs! They are so small and cute! I'm hoping that they hatch this year with no problem! Maybe one more week. I had a couple of little whitetail bucks here in the yard with velvet antlers! It's excit...
We've had a couple of really nice days, a couple of hot days and a couple of windy days! We had a sprinkling of rain and lightning. More rain, less heat is what I'm praying for! My flycatchers are back in their new nest under the roof of the deck! I haven't looked to see how many eggs yet. I can do it without causing the parents alarm by using one of those gadgets with a telescoping wand and a small mirror on the end! I'll report back on the progress. I hope they make it this year! Cindy Clark...
Happy June! This last week of May has been chalked full of brandings in this community! Along with graduations, baby showers, wedding showers, and lake time! Yes, it is officially spring for another few days! Last week we had lots of snow. Now we have an 80-degree day! The grass is greening up! I have noticed the Eastern and western kingbirds have arrived! I saw a goldfinch and a few warblers, too! The sweet peas are adding lots of color to the prairie. I attended graduation for the senior Penguins on...
Mother Nature surprised us up here in Loring with about 4 inches of good wet snow! I'm just estimating the depth, but it sure seemed thick on the car. The hills are starting to green up so we are happy! I'm still on the lookout for the goldfinches, yellow warblers, and Orioles! I see a couple of young hawks in some of the nests and I'm praying that they make it to adulthood! Carol Lumsden and I traveled to Havre to get my new lenses for my glasses on Thursday! We saw some old friends while we we...
Sunday Loring got a two-inch rain! Yes! Two inches between each drop on the deck! That is something that we need out here the dreaded word...MOISTURE! The gopher hunt was a success again this year. Twenty-one teams were entered, shooting 2999 gophers. Many people came out for lunch and dinner and visited with friends who we might not see very often! Hi-Line Meats donated and cooked up a beef chuck roast, no not gopher, for the evening! They also donated burgers and Polish sausage for lunch. The...
April brought us a mix of moisture, a little mist, a little rain and a bit of snow, too. But not much! We had lots of wind! The birds are migrating through. I even heard the sandhill cranes the other day! The spring flowers crocuses are still blooming on the hillsides. I have not seen the yellow bells that I look forward to the last week of April. Maybe they are just a little slow this year. I went to senior lunches in Whitewater on Wednesday, then Lu and I spent a few hours at the Great Plains...
We've had a few days of spring snow which was very welcome since we are very dry up here. I've spotted some mourning doves, killdeer, and juncos. I'm sure the warblers and finches will be coming in May. I went over to Whitewater on Friday to visit with Connie Blake and meet her son Barrett before they were headed back to Tennessee. I stopped to see Bonnie McMullen and wish her a happy birthday. Then stopped at Lu Besel’s for lunch before going in to the museum to work on the inventory. Lu B...
Many of the farmers are in the fields whether fertilizing or planting, or both! The fields are dry and we could use some rain, that's for sure! Keep on praying and I know it'll come! Yes, the crocuses are blooming and I haven't seen the yellow bells, but I'll look again on Wednesday, and report back! I'm so thankful that we continue to have our natural cycles to carry on the seasons and the changes in them! Lu Besel and I went over to Rudyard on Saturday for a Montana Dinosaur Trail meeting. We...

Happy Easter to all of my readers! Spring signs are popping up everywhere! Baby calves, lambs, meadowlarks, robins, and other birds flying in, and lots of gophers? The crocuses are blooming very close to the ground to escape the vicious winds, according to Jeanie Green! Today we have some wild winds and sprinkles. I was in Billings over the weekend and Buster visited the Lumsden home while I was gone! I helped celebrate three birthdays while down there. So happy that I got the chance to be...

I had a Robin arguing in my cottonwood tree for his territory! Lots of gophers running around. I gave a school tour at the GPDM on Wednesday! Still exciting to see the kids and fossils together! Cindy Clark and I attended the Malta Chamber dinner and got to see Rebecca Engum of Great Falls give her speech!...
Even though it is March, many signs of spring are evident. A Robin was spotted in Loring on Sunday by Cindy Clark! It was just hop, hop, hopping around! The myriads of geese have flown in to the waterways over by Whitewater, and gophers are plentiful out on the hillsides. I saw several beautiful bald eagles this week. We really need either snow or rain. Nearly all the ranchers have started their vigilance watching for momma cows who might need help! A very busy and stressful time of year for...

As you know, the subzero temperatures broke last Thursday and now we are even above freezing! The wind is blowing up a Chinook I think! I said last week that my water was frozen at the pump, it got thawed out and ran fine, but on Wednesday my sewer got frozen! It's the pits! I had to go to Billings for an appointment on Thursday, so all the work was put off for a couple of days. It's not my favorite thing to do, worry about water/sewer issues! But the Pump and Dump Crew showed up with their...
Goodness sake! The temperatures took a dive and didn't get above zero for the week. The baby lambs have had a hard time keeping warm! But Jeanie Green, the shepherdess, worked hard to catch them before they got too cold and was successful in saving her babies. I haven't heard of anyone calving yet, but I'm sure there are a few! Good luck to all the ranchers who have to be out in this weather. Of course my water froze for the first time in 20 years or so. It used to freeze on a regular basis,...
Just for your information, winter arrived with a mean force! Not much snow here in Loring, but the negative highs are enough! Looking on the bright side, winter shouldn't last longer than a couple of months instead of six. I'm thinking that a little more snow might be welcome, or maybe spring rains! You know how I'm always on the lookout for birds, especially snowy owls. A friend from California sent a newspaper article that reported a snowy owl being sighted in Central Park, New York City! As...
What a great topic for the month of love, February! Love by Choice is a nonprofit, consisting of three parts. Love by Choice focuses on education and support for foster families, including drug and alcohol issues, behavior issues due to trauma, and other support. The Second part is the Mia Project. The foster children come into the system often with no pictures of themselves. Jennifer Ray Photography gives foster children a session per year at no charge. And the third part is Izzy’s Closet. I...
Welcome February! We are cold up here, but not much snow. I heard that many ranchers have put calving later in March or so! That explains why there is no precipitation. No puddles or snow banks to have the calves in! I'm teasing, I hope the time when calving starts that the weather is accommodating! The moon was beautiful this week! This last week I traveled to Whitefish on the train! Very relaxing, no stress! Got to Whitefish about 9 in the evening, caught the shuttle to The Lodge on Whitefish...
The moon will be full on January 28! It is called the Wolf Moon. I just love the fact that no matter where you are on Earth, you all look at the same moon if it's not overcast! I was talking to a guy on a helpdesk and during the downtime, while waiting for the computer to load he asked me what I was doing in Montana. I told him I was watching the moon and Mars. He said, “Oh I don't think we have that here!” That was a good chuckle! Have you noticed that the daylight is longer? Monday, Dixie Sto...
