    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Dec 29, 2021

Friday, December 17, Cary Woodruff culminated his five years of post graduate studies by defending his thesis. He studied for his doctorate at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto under David Evans. Dr. Woodruff has been Director of the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum and Field Station in Malta, since March of 2016. His doctorate work was on pachycephalosaurus, or the head butter dinosaurs. He researched to find if they really were head butters. He came to the conclusion that they probably...

Happy new year to all my readers. As I write this the temperature is -17 with a wind chill of -37. Unfathomable to most people. I am staying in today. But I look out and see some of the sharp tail grouse hunkered down in the pine trees. Their feathers are fluffed out to trap the air to help them stay warm. Every day this week it seems snow has blanketed the grassland. We don’t have a huge amount, but every bit of moisture is welcome! All the Lumsden girls were at Pete and Carol Lumsdens for C...

It was certainly serendipitous when Pastor Bob got a tire that was going flat at Senior meals at the North Forty. He aired it up and started off for Malta. But he had planned to deliver a meal to Pat Murdock, but he couldn’t do it with a low tire! So I got a chance to drive up to Pat’s and visit for a few minutes! Lu Besel rode along with me! We must look for the exciting smidgens left for us to enjoy a happy life! Also that day I saw two hawks sitting on the power poles! North Country Repair ho...

If we get clear skies in the evenings you will be able to see Venus close to the horizon in the west, then a golden planet Saturn and even farther up in the sky a bright Jupiter! And as the week goes the moon moves along the row of planets, kind of highlighting each one for three nights. The planets will be visible for a few weeks this month! I participated in the vendor fair on Saturday at the Phillips County Museum. I saw many friends, old and new. I enjoyed everything about it. And was able...

Wednesday we received about an inch of snow, the grass was covered, the highways were icy. But Rodney and I got to Billings in good shape. I helped cook some of the specialties for the Thanksgiving feast! The family met at Jeanie Schroeder’s for dinner. We missed Jacob Wilcox and his family. I stayed at the Boot Hill Inn and when I got back from celebrating with the kids, I went down to the hot tub. To my surprise another Phillips County couple was there enjoying their grandkids swimming! N...

The wind was strong and wouldn’t be satisfied til it wreaked havoc on something! So it chose one of my fifty year old ponderosa pine trees and dropped the top right in my drive way! But I have a neighbor who uses a fireplace and they will cut it up and let it dry. The greenery will be beautiful in the creations for Christmas! My tree line will look different in my sunset pictures but it won’t be too bad! Several people got together this week for lefsa making parties! I participated in one suc...

Even though the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum is closed for the season, we had a busy week. I gave a school tour on Wednesday, for a small group of very interested students! Then we had A Night at the Museum appreciation event with appetizers and other liquid refreshments! Victor and Marilyn Bjornberg, of Helena, popped in for the festivities! Anne Boothe mentioned the original board members who have passed away, and their contributions to the museum. President Damien Austin welcomed everyone....

Only two more months till the year 2022! Seems like '21 flew by! Connie Wasson hosted Woman’s Club on Monday, with eight members attending. We discussed a project for the HLRC, reviewed the Loring dance and the lunch we served at Debbie Dyrdahl’s funeral. We also discussed a Christmas catered party we’ll have in Malta. I traveled to Billings on the windiest day of the year, Wednesday! I saw many semis pulled into places to wait it out. I know they got off schedule, but it was dangerous to be hig...

I’ve said this before, if funerals weren’t for a person who has passed away, the gathering would be a joyous occasion! Debbie Dyrdahl’s family honored her wishes to have her final farewell at the Loring Lutheran Church. Cindy Clark, lay pastor, had been visiting Debbie and offering communion for years. She was honored to do the service for Debbie’s family. Debbie’s sister, Jeri and Gary Reba, of Denver, and her two older brothers, Jim and Jack Halter, were here and Debbie’s daughter, S...

Today I finished my 10-day quarantine! I was pretty excited because I knew I was going to be ok and I’d go to church and do all sorts of things around the house and yard! Just a minute there, I’m still easily fatigued. I made it to church, but I was very low on energy! I have been nowhere and I’m so thankful for thoughtful neighbors to bring me supplies from Malta. They left it on the deck so we didn’t get too close. Yesterday was Observe the Moon Night. It was so clear that it was perfect...

Venus was in conjunction with the moon earlier this week. I had several people ask me which planet was so close to the crescent moon in the west! It was Venus, traveling behind the moon and appearing on the other side the next evening. It’s the brightest object in the night sky other than the moon. Somewhere I caught COVID-19. I must say it’s not fun, but luckily it’s a fairly mild case. For me it’s like a head cold, sore throat, cough, stuffy sinuses, and low energy. I pray that you don’t g...

Welcome to October! I can vouch that the trees along the Milk River are beautiful this fall, all the way to it Bank! The yellows and greens of the cottonwoods combined with the occasional red or orange of one of the bushes just made the trip enjoyable! I traveled on highway 2 to meet my sisters, Debbie and Dee in Cut Bank for the memorial of my cousin Lisa’s husband. It was also a fund raiser of gigantic proportions! Buster Stordahl got to spend some time with the Lumsden family while I was g...

16 Oh wow! The wind really kicked up on Saturday and actually ripped up a few shingles on my roof! So rude! But on the positive side, none of my trees broke off and smashed into my vehicle! Got to count blessings of all sorts! I have been working at the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum quite a lot this last month. I love to visit with the people who come in and answer any questions they might have! This week I was happily surprised to see Jeremy Pearson and his family stop in. He was a student...

The temps this last week have been pretty warm, but I do enjoy a warm day with a cool evening! I flew Cape Air to Billings and back this week. The ride was very smooth and uneventful, and I’d recommend it if you need to go to Billings. While in Billings I had a Dermatology appointment and my sister Debbie honored me with a birthday party! I’m on another trip around the sun! Congratulations to Amus, Everette, and Etta Blunt on the birth of their sister, Dorothy Lynn! Pete and Carol Lumsden are...

The moon is waning and soon it will be a new moon, really dark, but great star gazing time! The rains were spotty this week. Every drop is welcomed! The grass greened up a little, and the dust was washed off the trees! The goldfinches have really moved into my sunflowers! They are quite the acrobats, standing upside down to get the seed! I had a hummingbird come into my feeder this week! I was lucky to see it! Cecile Norville spent the week with Nana and Papa Lumsden. Pete Lumsden and Jay Blunt...

Rain! Precious rain fell from the skies several times this week. Unofficially, the amount in Loring was 2 inches! Everyone has a big grin on and the grass is even a bit greener! The full moon this weekend was truly beautiful! And the two planets, Jupiter and Saturn, were closely dancing for position! Carol Lumsden and I drove to Whitewater where we picked up Lu Besel and on to pick up Lynn Hill and then on to Pat and Roseann Olson’s for a baby shower honoring their daughter Leah. Many of t...

This year has been one for the books! After last year with the restrictions on travel, etc. I thought “back to more normal” would be great! I was not thinking about a record year for no moisture and high temperatures then pile on a truckload of grasshoppers! I'm thankful that most of the people I know are well, and managing their lives ok. It's just hard to adjust to a different lifestyle. Wow! We got a gentle rain for about 12 hours on Sunday! It was welcome, Fair goers were enjoying the Ind...

With the smoke in the atmosphere, the sun looks neon orange as it sets in the west! It makes for very brightly colored sunsets and the moon is very orange when it comes up also! It is just starting the waxing crescent phase. The weather has been hot mostly and dry! And now I'm seeing more damage by the grasshoppers also! Cary Woodruff, Shannon and Richard Carr and daughter, Charli were dinner guests at Dixie Stordahl’s on Tuesday. Cary and Richard are paleontologists at the Great Plains D...

Loring is still in the throes of summer with hot dry weather. I know some people thrive in the hotness, but I’m ready for highs in the 70’s. In three months I’ll be wondering why it’s so cold! Never satisfied!! I saw a family of Hungarian partridges and am happy that they have survived thus far! Our community extends sympathy to the Martin Campbell family. Carol Lumsden traveled with the Norville grandkids to Lewistown for the swim meet. The girls have improved so much this summer! The Loring...

Whoa! Is it hot enough? I think so! I’m in Billings for a week and it is very hot here. But just have to remember the month of January and realize that winter is not that far away! I took a tour with a bunch of ladies to Wyoming this weekend! We stopped at the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum in Cody! It was fantastic! I stayed for 6 hours and hit every part but didn’t read everything. We tasted the Wyoming Whiskey offerings at Kirby, visited the bentonite plant where kitty litter is processed. The dri...

The flycatchers eggs hatched. I think only three, but they are keeping the mom busy! It is so hot here that I'm surprised the eggs aren't hard boiled! I see a few hoppers moving in but so far they aren't getting my geraniums! I'm hoping the sharp tails will enjoy their special treats! And that they eat lots of them! I went to trivia this week at the brewery! It's always a fun time and I get to see some friends that I don't see often! I did not win this week. But that's ok! The Loring Women's...
