This first week of summer has been great! Some warm days, some cooler days, mostly windy days, a smattering of rain. The wildlife is amazing! Baby antelope, deer, and birds, many porcupines on the highway traveling to another tree. I was driving to town on Monday when I saw something cross the road. I stopped close to where it went in the ditch and it was a badger, just sitting on a pile of dirt by a hole, looking at me. It went in the hole and came back up, back in and a skunk came out! That...
Many of the Loringites attended the funeral services for Ruth Flansaas on Tuesday in Malta. We send our condolences to the family. I made the trip in to town on Monday evening for the sharing of memories. The wind blew like it would never stop on a couple of days. The community picnic was postponed due to wet, windy weather. Then on Thursday the weather was almost perfect, calm, 70’s. Then back at it on Friday and hot. I think it got to 90 degrees. Saturday was very warm but in the evening it s...
The whole east side of Loring has been mowed and it looks really nice! Thank you to Kenny and Cindy Clark. The Loring Club tidied up the park in preparation of the community picnic on Wednesday! Jeannie Schroeder, Saige and Zoey Stordahl drove up from Billings this weekend. They were dinner guests of mine on Saturday evening and we all painted while Rod killed a few gophers and got the water set for the lawn. Buster and I drove over to visit Carol Lumsden one day last week. Jonnae Slade and...
RAIN! I’m not sure how much but it is very welcome! Most of the calves are branded and waiting to be put out to summer pasture! This rain is such a blessing. I see the eastern and western kingbirds are back! Now I’m waiting to spot the Larkbunting. I heard from a birder friend from Galveston and he said the migration is later than usual. He brings tour birders up to Montana to observe the birds in this area. If you want a great entertaining afternoon or evening, you can miss with the Fort Pec...
A big thank you to all our military people who fought for our freedom and gave the ultimate sacrifice. The urge to travel across the coulee and visit my parents’ graves was strong. Since I’m not completely ready to drive myself, I was thankful that Cindy Clark offered to drive. We drove the north road which I haven’t been on for years and it was interesting. The whole area is very dry but the calves that we saw looked good. Just a note that the Border Bar is open in Turner on Thursday throu...
I’ve seen more birds this week, mostly because I was sitting watching the trees and exercising my leg to get stronger! I saw a nuthatch, flycatchers, goldfinches, and, of course, the blackbirds, meadowlarks, and robins! Cindy Clark offered to drive me to physical therapy until I can drive myself. So I had pt and a Doctor's appointment on Thursday. We also went to senior meals in Whitewater on Wednesday. Lynn Hill came down just so she could see me and know that I was doing good! On Sunday I h...
We were blessed with a nice gentle rain that kind of reminded us older folks of the rains we used to get! It was only one day but it made everyone smile! Now that we know it can happen I pray that it happens again until our dams are full! I’m thankful to be home from my surgery. I was gone for almost three weeks! My knee is doing well. It doesn’t hurt anymore, but there is a tight feeling right around the knee. I think as my swelling goes down from my exercises and walking the feeling will be di...
Another spring week with very strong winds and little rain. I have faith that the rain will come! I just hope it’s in time to make some grass grow and give the prairie a good drink! The migratory birds seem to be a bit slower to show up this year. Some are trickling through though so it’s always a treat to see them! A huge congratulations to the songsters from Whitewater school. They earned a 1 on the pieces that they did at state festival! I’m still in the Rehabilitation Hospital of Monta...
Happy May Day! Did any of you get flowers at your door? Did you catch your secret May Day deliverer? That used to be the funnest little race not to get caught! The gopher shoot was this weekend! Kenny Clark reported that 6459 critters were executed today! Twenty two person teams entered the contest and I’m sure everyone had fun! Alan Snider and Hoyt Mahon won with the most kills. Second place was Layne Engel and Tyler Anthony, with third place going to Jalen Lamb and Tyson Dowell. I’m in Bil...
A wonderful surprise for me when I looked at my shelf with my amaryllis bulbs stored on it! One had grown a new bud shoot and will be blooming soon! Such a lift to my heart! Spring birds that I’ve noted lately, slate sided junco, robins, meadowlarks, gulls, lots of hawks, and I’ve heard the song of a finch or warbler! The weather has been so fickle, teasing about moisture, but not delivering. The relentless wind is never ending! It actually blew a few pieces of my soffit off! I pray that you...
Of course I know that a winter storm can roll through any month! This one was a doozy and we’ve had very little snow all year. Then overnight it snowed and snowed. No wind! So before we could have church on Easter morning, Kenny Clark got the patio and the front all cleared from snow! I think there was 5 inches! So thankful for the snow! I went to town on Saturday morning to get fruit for the next day. I met Tina Russell for breakfast before she started on her way with Janet Johnston back to F...
When I went to AZ this time I missed the big wind event that was in northern Phillips County! I have not discovered any problems except a few branches down on the back yard. The electricity was off or partial power for parts of two days! I heard a meadowlark singing on Sunday morning! I’ve been waiting but I’ve been gone for a week. Paula Morrison brought snacks for after church on Sunday! She is doing well! I’m glad to have them home! Spring is a time for track meets and proms and both were...
Congratulations to Dan and Judy Simonson on the birth of their grandson this week! Momma Kiana and daddy Matt are doing well! I am in Arizona with my brother Scott. He just retired, but not really because he’ll continue to work for a few more months. It’s certainly nice to know that you are valuable to your fellow constituents! All of the Cowan sisters, my daughter-in-law Brandie, and cousin Laurie Bjorklund flew to Scottsdale to help Scott celebrate his retirement. Brandie visited with a fri...
Wow! Monday already! Last week was a beautiful spring week! I am still waiting for the true sign of spring…the song of the Meadowlark! I was looking around in my tiny flower bed and I saw a bit of green coming up, an iris leaf! So hopeful! I’ve been working at the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum a little this week getting the new merchandise labeled and priced. Dolly Anne Wilcutt helped me on Saturday. I attended a memorial service for Dorothy Granlund on Saturday. Dorothy and her family lived nor...
Spring is officially here! Lots of geese flying north. The snow has melted except in the tree grounds. I’m just waiting for the meadowlark to sing his song for me! Cindy Clark hosted Loring Woman’s Club on Wednesday and invited all the members to dinner as a farewell for Tina Russell. Tina gave us all a small gift to remember her by. She wasn’t here for long, but certainly made a place for herself in our hearts. Most of the discussion was about the Easter eatery or decor that we’d like to give...
Wow, the clocks have sprung forward one hour so it is more like spring. I always have a tough time when the time changes, but only for two days. I heard more geese flying over today. It’s a welcome sound and sight, too! I was involved in a conversation about butterflies one day this week. Most people know that the monarch butterfly is one of the insect family that migrates to a warmer climate in the late fall. But we didn’t understand how that could happen because butterflies don’t have a long...
Wednesday evening 3/2 the snow started coming down while we were at Ash Wednesday services and dropped about 4 inches overnight! Then on Thursday, it picked up again and maybe a couple more inches! So needed! On Wednesday I noticed that the dog was drinking from a puddle of water not frozen. When I went out to investigate, I had a leak in the pump house basement which made the basement a swimming pool! Just so thankful for Pete Lumsden, Jay Blunt, and Rodney Stordahl for coming to my rescue....
Meteorological spring is on March 1. I know the gophers are out and a few birds are moving around. I’ve seen quite a few eagles and hawks. Astronomic spring is March 22, also known as the spring equinox. Rodney Stordahl drove Dixie Stordahl to Billings for a few days. We attended a baby shower for Brentton and Abby on Sunday at Dave and Brandie’s home. And on Tuesday I had a couple of doctor appointments. We came home on Wednesday. On Thursday I got a message from Brentton that I was a great gra...
February is the month that the bald eagles and geese return north! I admit I’ve seen eagles all winter, this year but I suspect it might have been injured. On the trip to Billings I saw several bald eagles and a few ravens! Loring Women's Club met at the Stordahl home on Wednesday with five ladies in attendance. Under discussion was the farewell for Tina and Charles Russell and we are to be thinking about what we want to do for the HLRC residents for Easter. The Blunts spent the weekend at t...
Cindy Clark and I actually spotted a gopher on Wednesday! Then I heard that Chuck Russell was lucky enough to pop one off on Saturday! Now is the best time to get them before they have their new litter. Taylor Hellie's little Boston Terrier ran off on Monday and Taylor searched and searched for him. On Sunday she got a call that he had been found in the hay bales by Pete and Carol Lumsdens! Isn't that a happy ending? Cecily Norville spent the week with Nana and Papa Lumsden. She was recovering...
The temperature has been so warm I wouldn’t be surprised to see a gopher scampering around. This week I realized how nice my Jeep looks with a new bumper! So many of the talented people that we need, really go over and above for their customers! Doesn’t it always happen on a Sunday? The water for the whole farm was down and those cows would not be easy to handle if they didn’t get water to drink! So a quick call to the well driller and he was there checking things out! It was a fairly easy...
What a beautiful week for the end of January! I know we need moisture, but the temps were so mild! Carol Lumsden spent the week in Billings with her father. She was able to visit with Jonnae Slade and family also. Healing prayers to John. Cindy Clark met Rebecca Engum in Lewistown for the weekend. They did some errands and took in the Winterfair where they saw a camel named Alice. On the way home Cindy met me in Malta where I left my Jeep to get a new bumper from A Fine Line! The Whitewater gym...
Between the warmer temps and the wind, our snow is mostly gone! Bring on the next storm! The sunsets have been very artistically pleasing! Very colorful! Tina Russell hosted the Loring Woman’s Club on Wednesday. Six ladies attended. Our group is getting smaller. Tina will be moving so she passed the Treasurer's job on to Dixie Stordahl. We all will miss Tina and Charles, but wish them all the best! Our prayers are with John Flansaas, who fell and broke his hip. He is scheduled for a hip replacem...
The full moon greeted me this Sunday evening. The first full moon in 2022 is called the Wolf Moon, I don’t know why, I just read it on earthsky.org. The day was so sunny and clear! The temps for this whole week were above average. Our snow is disappearing slowly. Carol Lumsden took a drive to Swift Current for a dentist appointment. She had no trouble going or coming. She did have a negative COVID test 48 hours earlier. Cindy Clark, Jackie Lageson and I drove into Malta on Tuesday for p...
Happy new year to everyone! Can you believe it? 2022! Let’s go! Make the year one of the best. Good luck to the Bobcats from Montana State University in the championship game this weekend! Everyone knows I don’t really follow collegiate football, but this is exciting! A Montana team is in the championship! The temperatures were really in the basement all week. But we did not have much wind. Sunday the temperature rose to about 30 above but the wind was howling! Living in eastern Montana for my...
