Several people from northern Phillips County were present at the funeral of Kathy Obie in Hardin on Saturday. Rodney and I, Jeanie Green, Pat Anderson, Seth Anderson, the Kenny Clark family, Kyle and Kellie Wasson and Mandy Moore all made the trip! I’m not completely certain that the roads will be better, but this next week quite a few people will be traveling to ball games. On Monday I joined a couple of other residents to celebrate a birthday at the Montana Club. Whatever year you are c...

Welcome to 2025! Winter has made an appearance! Snow has piled up in Billings, about 6 inches here at Affinity. Not so much at Loring, less than an inch. But I’m sure that it will be coming! On Saturday Rodney and Zoey picked me up to take me to the basketball game at RMC. My goal was to watch Paige Wasson play with her team. I was surprised when I realized that the opponent was Montana Tech. So Kia Wasson was also playing! What excitement! Sister against sister! And when the Wasson boosters sta...

Happy New Year to all of you reading this article. Someone said, “Christmas is over.” As I contemplated that statement I realized that Christmas is ongoing, never over. It’s a day that we celebrate Christ’s birth, but the reason he was born is never over. And all I can say to that is “Thank you, Lord!” On Christmas Eve I attended a candlelight service at Joy Lutheran with a friend, Carol Metzger. I realized that I’ve been missing the liturgy of the Lutheran church and I was refreshed. Do...

Every place is festive with lights twinkling, even though there is a few miles between the farms! Loring Lutheran Church will be celebrating Jesus’s birth on Christmas Eve with a candle lit service at 5:30. No Sunday service until 2025! At this time of year I usually reflect on my life and what’s happened in the last year. This year I’m thankful for basically good health. I had no hospital stays, no falls and no car accidents. My sight is my most irritating loss, but I can still see. I play...

Only 3 more weeks to write 2024! And many parties until then! Be cautious when driving around this weekend! Basketball fever is rampant in Phillips County! Malta Mustangs and Mettes played in an opening tournament in Lewistown where both teams split games. Keep working! The Lady Mavericks won both of their games in Miles City. I think the guys split the games. Congrats to Kennedy Simonson on her recognition for sports and academics! I didn’t get to see Kathy Obie this week. And one of my f...

Still one month til official winter, but this side of Montana has several inches of snow now. What about the Malta Mustangs? Class B state Champions! Very impressive! I listened on KMMR! Thanks to all the people behind the scenes who make this type of memory so perfect! Rita Frasure, a friend I met through the GPDM years ago, picked me up and we met up with a friend of hers Kathleen for dinner. Then we went to the Babcock theater for the movie, Dead Poet’s Society. I’d seen it before but a long...

Great week for me, so busy! Loved being at my old stomping ground, seeing the horizon at dawn and at sunset, gazing at the last super full moon of the year, enjoying the trees that Tom and I planted, and visiting with friends. On the way back to Billings on Saturday evening we hit our first blizzard of the season, between the Missouri River and Roundup! So thankful that Rod was driving! Cindy Clark and I traveled to Glasgow on Tuesday. She had a dentist appointment and I visited with Liza...

Congrats to the North Country Lady Mavericks on the second place finish at the Divisional Tournament. On to State! I made the trip from Billings to Loring with Cindy Clark on Saturday. I am happy to be back for a week, and catch up with some friends! Cindy visited with me for a couple of days at Affinity. Loring has a new family living here. John and Megan Biggs and their two daughters, from Sheridan, Wyoming. John works for Kyle Wasson. Welcome to Loring! I know there are more families that I...

Tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov. 5) is Election Day. I went down to the Courthouse to register on Tuesday. I thought I had registered in June, but they didn’t have my name. So next week we’ll find out who will be leading our country for the next four years. My granddaughter Zoey and I went to the pool on Saturday and guess who was there! I’ll tell you! Joe and Jeanette Depuydt were visiting Jean Depuydt who resides here at Affinity. Jordy, their grandson, was already in the pool. Joe is a good conversati...

Can you believe it is almost the end of October? Time continues to march on, but I think it’s flying now. Happy Halloween to all. I think I might have three goblins show up at my apartment. We already had a Halloween party with costumes and special snacks! I’ve seen evidence that the Clark addition is looking like an addition now! Maybe Cindy will have her bedroom back before the snow starts building up! Congrats to Shelbi LaBrie for being the Class C Cross Country State Champion! That’s two y...

I hope everyone who reads this column got to check out the unusual sight in the evening sky this week! That comet really put on a show! I enjoyed all the photos of it too! And the full moon earlier this week really was outstanding! I had several visitors this week. Tim and Sheila Watts-Heine came over and visited while I presented her a 50-year pin for OES Sacajawea Chapter membership (Photo on Page 12). It was great to connect with her! Then the Wishers stopped in. Sammie was going to run a...

The fall always brings the migration of birds back south. Lots of geese and cranes have been sited and heard flying over! The robins and meadowlarks at Loring should be flying out soon if they haven’t already! Preconditioning of the cows is happening as they are moved to the winter pasture closer to the home place. Preconditioning is getting the calves ready for shipping. I hope the prices are high! I’ll be cleaning out my garden this week. I’ve saved seed from my cantaloupe which was very...

Oh, the joy of having all of my siblings around for almost a week! Scott Cowan and Dee Arndt both arrived in Billings on Tuesday. We really didn’t have plans for Wednesday except to tour the Affinity and meet a few of Dixie’s friends. On Thursday we all met at the Meadowlark Brewery for dinner and a little taste of David’s Beer Shananigens. Brent, Abby and boys and David, Brandie and Rocco joined us. Soon the hours marched by and in a flash, we were all sleeping and regenerating our energ...

My goodness, Mother Nature has changed her nature! Yesterday on September 29 the temperature was so high it broke a record here in Billings. I know Malta had record highs also! But today the cold wind from the northwest is chilly! The sun is shining so I’m optimistic that it’ll be a bit warmer, but not above 70! With autumn on the way, or already here, my little farm will need to be cleaned up soon. I’m still harvesting my cherry tomatoes, peppers, and cantaloupe. I have two potato plants that...

Happy fall, y’all! This past week's rain was a welcome surprise in most of Montana. Here in Billings, we got over an inch, and at Loring, it was more like two inches! So welcome! Now the seeding of winter wheat is more promising! I don’t drive much down here so getting groceries I rely on friends who don’t mind driving me or I order delivery. This last week I had an order from Walmart delivered and was pleasantly surprised when Clay Murdock brought my groceries to the door! He drives and deliv...

Happy fall! The temperature has been very nice, in the 80’s and high 70’s! In Billings, we had a couple of nice rains, about a tenth or two. We really needed it. And also, a shower up at Loring. Now they are very dry and I’m hoping they get another little shower to get some moisture into the ground before the snow flies. I heard a chickadee this week and I saw a purple finch taking a bath in the fountain out front! I don’t see that many birds here. But there is a park not too far from here at Af...

September came in on a furnace! Very hot and it’s going to last for at least another few days! Not really complaining since soon it’ll be 110 degrees lower! That’s Montana! My little 3’ x 3’ farm is really producing some yummy tomatoes! I also have one cantaloupe that is not ripe, but I hope it will be soon! The raised gardens here are just so luscious! Beautiful flowers of all kinds! The vine veggies are crawling out of their area! Just fabulous! I had a birthday party on Labor Day with the...

My weeklong visit to Loring has come to an end! I certainly enjoyed every day! Rod had done so much work cleaning out the dead wood in the free ground that we walked through the rows a couple of times! It sounds small but it was very enjoyable! On Monday I attended the GPDM meeting in Malta. On Tuesday Cindy Clark and I drove to Malta for a couple of appointments. We met Krystina Neilsen at the GN for lunch. In the afternoon I visited with Nancy Murdock and Chloe. Wednesday was senior meals at...

What a welcome sight to see as I came across the North Bench, there were so many bales in the fields and stacked! They look really nice! The crops were in the middle of harvest and the combines were all resting! It had rained and given the farmers a little reprieve. Rodney Stordahl spent the week in Billings with Zoey. She came over for a couple of days to swim and paint. Then I came home with Rod. He dropped me off at Williams in Landusky where Lu Besel was visiting, and we attended the...

By the time you get this, the schools will be open with many children playing at recess and learning their reading writing, and ‘rithmatic! Wow! Seems like just a week or so when I watched the junior/senior highs present their final project! I hope everyone has a great year! Last week, I missed Etta Blunt winning a rosette for her pillowcase sewing project. Congratulations, Etta! A fruit truck comes through Billings every so often. This time it was peaches from Colorado. My sister Debbie and I d...

Still lots of smoke from the fires in the western United States aloft around Billings and Loring. I can’t smell it most days, but it sure looks foggy. I pray for rain even though the farmers are harvesting, but like my dad would say, “Never complain about rain in Montana!” So, we’ll take it whenever it comes! Mylee Clark is one of the actresses in Cinderella this month! Cindy Clark is busting at the seams she’s so proud of those grandkids of hers for following their dreams! Carol Lumsden c...

The smoke in the sky makes for beautiful sunsets and sunrises! The moon has been full this week, so it has had some beautiful colors too! But the clear blue sky is still the best! The temps have been in the 60’s for lows and 90’s for highs. It is pretty hot. The hay is getting brought in to store for the cows this winter. Some places seem to have lots of grasshopper damage while others have escaped the hungry critters. The winter wheat is turning that golden color, and the barley is getting rip...
